    Laurie McDonald, a member of Electron Movers assisted by Michael Carr, created the video installation Sylvanscapes at Artpark in Lewiston, NY. According to the catalog, phosphorescent chemicals were poured into three 100" lengths of clear flexible plastic tubing which were woven through the trees, rocks, and bushes of the Ames Theater trail to illuminate and draw through the woods; the tubing was then placed in the Niagara River at a point of changing currents with eddies and whirlpools. When currents ran downstream the lines were drawn 10" below the surface and diffused light, and when currents ran upstream sections surfaced and snaked to combine diffused and clearer light effects.

    Site-specific installation Video Trail by Robert Jungels, Alan Powell and Laurie McDonald (members of Electron Movers) was presented at Artpark, Lewiston, NY. The catalog reports six 23" monitors were buried along the Ames Theater trail with only the screens exposed; they displayed close-ups of a tunnel spider and web, ripening berries, the sky through silhouettes of leaves, and people walking viewed from above.

    Light Work, formed as a programming affiliate of the Community Darkrooms at Syracuse University, developed public-access darkroom and imaging facilities from the late 1960s and expanded into color printing, xerography and digital imaging. Its programs included residencies and exhibitions such as 1979 Alternative Imaging; a 1989 NYSCA grant funded an Amiga 2000 and the lab converted to Macintosh in 1993; the Light Work Endowment Fund supported portfolios including John Pfahl's 1997 Iris series; the organization launched a website in 1995 and by 1998 had invested over $75,000 in its digital facility.

  • The Eidophor Television System Tools

    Invented in 1939 and developed from the early 1940s in Zurich by Dr. Fritz Fisher, the Eidophor projector used a thin oil film on a rotating spherical mirror in vacuum scanned by a 15 kV electron gun to produce surface corrugations that diffracted arc or xenon lamp light through a Schlieren-like bar-and-slit optical system. Used extensively from the early 1950s into the 1980s, it incorporated CBS field-sequential and later dot-sequential color wheels and supported large-screen projection; documentation includes SMPTE articles (1950, 1953) and Eidophor training materials supplied by Bernhard Merk, Switzerland.
