    Conference Challenge for Change at NYU convened November 21–23, 1971; 50 participants from NYS met with the Challenge for Change unit of the National Film Board of Canada.   • An Interview with George Stoney Interview

    George C. Stoney (born 1916) is a community and media activist, film and video professor, and maker of about 40 sponsored social and educational documentaries including All My Babies (1952). He became executive producer of the National Film Board of Canada’s Challenge for Change in 1968 and pioneered half‑inch video experiments and community training (VTR‑St. Jacques; Drumheller, 1969); after returning to New York he chaired NYU’s Undergraduate Division and co‑founded the Alternate Media Center (1972). He helped design an NEA‑funded cable internship program that produced 29 interns and contributed to the founding of the National Federation of Local Cable Programmers (1976); the interview was recorded August–September 1983.

    George Stoney wrote, directed and produced over fifty documentaries and television series, including All My Babies (1953) and The Uprising of '34 (1995); he was executive producer of the Challenge for Change program at the National Film Board of Canada (1968–1970). He taught film at the University of Southern California, City College of New York, Columbia, Stanford and New York University and received the NYU Great Teacher Award (1988); he was founding board member of the National Federation of Local Cable Programmers (1976–1986) and received the Manhattan Borough President's Award (1989) and the Leo Dratfield Award.
