Syracuse Alternative Media Network

The Syracuse Alternative Media Network is a non-profit video production cooperative. It was formed in 1983 to produce documentaries and educational programs which would present an alternative viewpoint. SAMN produces and distributes documentaries which examine a variety of social problems. SAMN also provides production services to community groups and trains students and community groups in media production. SAMN endeavors to enable people to work for social change and justice through the illumination of structural problems of social causes. SAMN also teaches video production to grades 3-12 at several local schools.

    Meeting of non-profit media groups convened March 9, 1979 at Synapse Video Center in Syracuse to continue discussions about forming an organization eventually known as Media Alliance; attendees included representatives from museums, university media centers, community video projects and public broadcasters, including Everson Museum, Experimental Television Center, Vasulka Corporation, Visual Studies Workshop, WCNY-TV and WXXI-TV.     Position paper to the New York State Council on the Arts arguing that Upstate New York’s media arts environment differs from New York City and requires targeted State support; it links regional isolation, access to camcorders and editing equipment, and public access cable with cultural heterogeneity and development. The paper proposes a dedicated NYSCA Upstate Media funding category with initiatives including entry-level publications, equipment redistribution, artists’ residencies, small-scale public access TV, organizational development, video rental libraries, micro-grants ($200–500), and encouragement of entry-level videomaking. It also recommends a one-person NYSCA satellite office in Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton, or Syracuse and expanded Media Bureau travel guidelines to support intra-State conferences and visiting-artist programs.

Both festivals were supported by Media Alliance, the Upstate Media Posse and the Art Media Studies Department of Syracuse University. The Upstate Media Posse organized to support planning for the first festival.
