• Terrence Cuddy People

  Terry Cuddy is a media artist whose work ranges from a play about a maintenance worker to a video installation about player pianos; in 2002 he produced the video Transient View of Western New York. He worked with nine poets in UB's Poetics Program, whose origins span Korea, Portugal and Philadelphia, each bringing outside experience to Buffalo. His work has been exhibited at Carnegie Art Center, Big Orbit Gallery (Buffalo), The Toronto International Video Art Biennial, Squeaky Wheel, Rat Powered Film Festival (CA), Art in General and Pyramid Art Gallery (Rochester); he presently teaches at Cayuga Community College and maintains www.terrycuddy.com.

  Michael Betancourt examines Julian Hochberg and Virginia Brooks' argument in Movies in the Mind's Eye that cinematic motion is a cognitive gestalt process rather than an ocular-physiological effect, and he applies that model to painterly motion. He analyzes examples including Eadweard Muybridge's photographic studies, Rubens' portrait of Helene Fourment and Francis Bacon's Three Studies of Lucien Freud (1969), cites John Berger and Rudolf Arnheim, and discusses film, videotape, photography and flickering shutters as relevant technologies. The essay proposes a perceptually based kinetic art and includes bibliographic notes; the author is identified as an art critic and artist in Miami, Florida.

• Synapse: Personal Recollections Groups

  Robert Edgar contributed an eyewitness account by email on 8/04; between 1973 and 1976 he taught two classes each semester at Synapse through the College of Visual and Performing Arts, a visiting-artist program and a production class in video aesthetics. Visiting artists included Nam June Paik, Dennis Oppenheim, Juan Downey, Jaime Davidovich, Tom DeWitt and Dimitri Devyatkin; Synapse averaged about one visiting artist per month. In the summer before 1974 participants installed the university's first cable system via manholes and crawlspaces, mounted monitors in campus buildings, promoted an alternative to commercial television and drew front-page Wall Street Journal coverage when Wavy Gravy inadvertently cablecast a 16mm Deep Throat into university geriatric housing.
