The Frontier is a weekly series of 16 programs broadcast on WNED-TV in Buffalo, NY. Series produced by Media Study/Buffalo, David Shapiro Director, which curates the series and WNED-TV which provides technical assistance for broadcast. Series showcases independent video and filmmakers. Support from the New York State Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, Canada Council.

    The Frontier is a series of 16 programs featuring work by 30 independent film and video makers from Buffalo and Western New York and from Toronto and Southern Ontario, produced by Media Study/Buffalo and broadcast by WNED-TV Channel 17. Lynn Corcoran is named as producer and is said to have selected and assembled the programs. Publication of the tabloid was funded by a Canada Council grant to the Toronto Super‑Eight Film Festival, and program support came from the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts and WNED membership.

  • Conference on Contemporary Directions Chronology

    Media Study/Buffalo, in collaboration with WNED-TV (Channel 17) and the Center for Media Study at the State University of New York at Buffalo, held its first Conference on Contemporary Directions in the Public Affairs Documentary in February 1979. Media Study/Buffalo announced a second annual conference scheduled for May 12–15, 1980.

    Media Study/Buffalo, a not-for-profit workshop, exhibition, and study center in Buffalo, NY, has established a 125-hour Videotape Collection of experimental video from 1964–1976; the initiative was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts and documents tools such as the Paik-Abe Synthesizer, Stephen Beck’s Direct Video Synthesizer, and the Rutt-Etra Scan Processor. Holdings include over 80 hours from NCET (selected and transferred by William Gwin), about a dozen hours from WGBH, works from WNET, and significant individual holdings by Skip Sweeney and Woody and Steina Vasulka; the collection comprises completed works, process experiments, and residency productions and is available for research and in-house viewing by appointment (contact John Minkowsky).
