    Gary Hill (b. 1951, Santa Monica) is a sculptor and video artist who moved east in 1969 and began making videotapes at Woodstock Community Video in the early 1970s; his work evolved from sculpture and analog/digital image experiments to language-based tapes and multi-monitor installations. He worked with Portapaks, a Siegel colorizer, an analog-to-digital converter and small frame buffer (64x64), and a Rutt/Etra scan processor; notable works include Bathing, Windows, Sums and Differences, Picture Story, Around and About, Videograms, Primarily Speaking, Mesh, Glass Onion and Equal Time. He received production grants from the NEA, NYSCA and WNET, a Rockefeller video artists' fellowship in 1981 and a United States/Japan Exchange fellowship in 1982; the interview was recorded in Barrytown, N.Y., on Oct. 28, 1982 and Jan. 5, 1983.

    Ken Montgomery has worked since the early 1980s to develop novel sound practices, including sound performances in darkness, octophonic audio installations, and the enhancement of incidental machinery sounds.     Gary Hill (born 1951, Santa Monica) is a Seattle-based video artist who uses video, audio, spoken and written text and sculptural space to explore language and the physical nature of communication; he began experimenting with video in 1973 and created his first installation, Hole in the Wall, in 1974. He was artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center, Binghamton, NY (1975–77), moved to Seattle in 1985 to establish a video program at Cornish College of the Arts, and received Rockefeller and Guggenheim fellowships and National Endowment for the Arts support. Tall Ships (1992) was created for Documenta IX, was included in the 1993 Whitney Biennial and is in the Henry Art Gallery; his awards include a MacArthur Fellowship (1998) and the Leone d'Oro for Sculpture at the 1995 Venice Biennale.
