Hayley Downs

University of Miami; Maine Film Workshops. Downs has been documenting Florida subcultures for several years. She creates "scratch videos". Exhibitions: NY Underground Film Festival; Chicago Film Festival; John Hopkins Film Festival; San Francisco Film Festival.

She created "Move", a commission by Miami Light Project, a non-profit performing arts organization, which continues to be widely shown. Her scratch video "BoarHog" screened at Art Basel in 2003. She has been documenting cracker culture, or multi-generational folk culture for the last three years.

  • New York State Council on the Arts Annual Report 1969-70 Groups

    The report documents NYSCA-supported film and media activities including a Young Filmmakers Albany South End workshop sponsored by Upper Hudson Library Federation, Aldo Tambellini working with elementary students at a television studio, and high school students screening films in Yorktown. It records Elaine Summers’ Electric Kinetic Gymnasium at C.W. Post College on Long Island planned to use twenty-four projectors. The Young Filmmakers Foundation and the Film Club on Rivington Street were chosen for pilot financial assistance; the report includes quotations from Howard Taubman and W. McNeil Lowry.

  • Set in Motion Chronology

    Set in Motion documents a New York State Council on the Arts celebration of 30 years of support for independents; the Council funded a series of 21 film and video programs between 1961 and 1993. Curators were Linda Earle, Leanne Mella and Debby Silverfine; catalog texts were contributed by Debby Silverfine, Daryl Chin, Leanne Mella, Marita Sturken and Pearl Bowser. The publication includes a chronology of activities and a listing of grant recipients for 1961–1993.

  • Courtney Rile People

    Courtney Rile is an artist, curator and arts coordinator based in Syracuse, NY; her video art has been shown internationally and locally, including the first Syracuse International Film and Video Festival. In 2005 she curated the moving-images program Videohm at an upscale lounge and bar in Syracuse, presenting nearly 300 hours of international experimental film and video and VJ work; she also coordinated the exhibition Clement Greenberg In Syracuse: Then & Now at ThINC's Company Gallery that year. She is Gallery Coordinator at Delavan Art Gallery and holds an A.A. in TV/Radio/Film from Montgomery County Community College, PA, and a B.F.A. in Video Art from Syracuse University, NY.

    Erik Moskowitz makes installations and films that examine the relationship between cinema space and gallery space; solo installation exhibitions at Momenta Art, Freight and Volume, Holiday (NYC) and Le Sous Salon (Paris); festival screenings at Impakt (Netherlands), Antimatter (Canada), Oberhausen (Germany), Experimenta (India), Press Play (Carnegie Mellon) and Experiments in Cinema (University of New Mexico); website http://www.americantrance.com/. Amanda Trager combines painting, sculpture and installation with first-person prose narrative; solo exhibitions at Momenta Art, Annika Sundvik (NYC), Clifford-Smith Gallery (Boston) and Le Sous Salon (Paris); group shows include Brooklyn Museum's Open House, NextNext Visual Art program at BAM, White Box gallery and Feature gallery (NYC); both live and work in NYC.

  • Tracking Video Art: Image Processing as a Genre Bibliography

    Lucinda Furlong, Curatorial Assistant in the Whitney Museum of American Art's Film and Video Department, traces the emergence of image processing as a distinct video-art genre from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s; she examines terminology, aesthetic debates, and the modernist and formalist impulses that shaped the work. The text documents early tool-builders and artists (Dan Sandin, Steina and Woody Vasulka, Eric Siegel, Stephen Beck, Bill Etra, Steve Rutt, Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe), key technologies (video synthesizers, Sandin Image Processor, Rutt-Etra, Moog, Z-Grass), institutions (Whitney Museum, Radical Software, Experimental Television Center, SUNY Binghamton, University of Illinois Circle Campus) and funding developments including a $50,000 NYSCA grant to Hocking's Center.
