People

With the first introduction of portable video technology in the late 1960s, creative and community-minded people worked alone and collaboratively to equip citizens with the means of creating and distributing independent programming. Early practitioners in the media field came from many arts and sciences disciplines, exploring video as an art medium and as a tool for social and cultural change.

Biographies and Interviews help us to envision the lives of those early makers as well as people active today. The Texts date from the formative days of the medium and include contemporary writings. These critical and analytical conceptual frameworks offer a window into the relationships between the early and contemporary arts practice.

    Survey of video art’s formation (1965–c.1977) arguing that its rise cannot be ascribed solely to the 1968 portapak; institutional uptake (Whitney Biennial 1973; MoMA Open Circuits Jan 1974) and a rapid proliferation of genres occurred in 1968–1972. The essay examines practitioners and technologies — including Woody and Steina Vasulka (video feedback; Didactic Video 1975), Steve Beck (synthesizers), Frank Gillette (Wipe Cycle 1969; Track/Trace 1973) and Paul Ryan (Earthscore; NYSCA support 1971–75) — to contrast intensive (materialist) and extensive (ecological/activist) strategies. It concludes that both technological primitives and ecological/communicative aims jointly shaped video’s early aesthetics before a shift toward normalization by c.1977–78.

  • About the Video History Project

    The Experimental Television Center’s Video History Project, begun in 1994, is an ongoing research initiative documenting video art and community television as they evolved in rural and urban New York State and spread across the US; initiatives include research, conferences and a website. The Project aims to identify, locate and make accessible tapes, artists’ instruments, writings and ephemera from early portable-media practices introduced in the late 1960s, and to cultivate research and public programming that situates independent media within broader cultural contexts. Thousands of tapes are held across New York State in libraries, museums, media arts centers, artists’ spaces, universities, video collectives and private collections; the Project invites public contribution and collaboration to assist preservation and access.

  • Jon Satrom People

    Jon Satrom discovered video while living in Bismarck, ND, a conservative community of around 60,000; he and a friend found the local community access station in the basement of the public library and he became deeply involved. He moved to Chicago and, while attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, witnessed the 'digital video revolution' as video shifted from magnetic tape to digital buffers and grew dissatisfied with one-sided editing programs, prompting him to integrate code writing into his art.
