Joe McKay

Bio Joe McKay grew up in Ontario and went to school at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. He has been living in New York for six years working as an artist and Macintosh computer consultant. This past year he participated in the Whitney.

PUBLIC PROJECTS 1999 Contributor to Lola magazine, a Toronto based art magazine, and co-creator of the Lola magazine web site. 1999 Five29Ninety9 I was one of the coordinators of a one day symposium which was held at St. Annes Church in Brooklyn. The symposium had 30 speakers (artists, activists, curators) from all over the world. 1990- present Transportation activist I have been an active participant in the cycling community in both New York and Toronto. I wrote reviews for Transmission magazine.

Joe McKay is an Ontario-born artist and Macintosh computer consultant who studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax and has lived in New York for six years; he participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program (2000–2001) and exhibited in group shows at venues including the New museum (New York), SculptureCenter, Artist's Space projects, YYZ (Toronto) and the National Gallery of Canada. He published multiple books (1992–1995) distributed through Printed Matter and Art Metropole and contributed to Lola magazine and its website; he co-coordinated the Five29Ninety9 symposium at St. Annes Church in Brooklyn, has been active in transportation advocacy and wrote for Transmission magazine.     Kim Tomczak is a multidisciplinary artist known for performance, photography and video; he was born in Victoria, B.C. in 1952 and graduated with honours from the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr College of Art) in 1975. He is a founding director of V Tape and serves on the boards of the Toronto Arts Council and the Alliance for Canada's Audio-Visual Heritage; since 1983 he has collaborated with Lisa Steele.     Joe Gibbons is an artist who received fellowships from funders including the New York Foundation for the Arts, Creative Capital and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Centre Pompidou; it was selected for the Whitney Biennial in 1993, 2000 and 2002. His films have been broadcast in Spain, France and Germany and on PBS, and he has collaborated with Tony Oursler, Karen Finley, Tony Conrad and Emily Breer.

    Pier Marton is a videomaker/new media artist and writer who taught film, video production and computer graphics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (chair, production program), UCLA and other institutions. His videos address ethnicity, spirituality, audience passivity and violence; his work has been exhibited at the Museum Of Modern Art, the Whitney and the Beaubourg and is held by M.O.M.A. (New York), the Carnegie Museum (Pittsburgh), the National Gallery of Canada and the Japan Victor Corporation Archives; he has received grants from the N.E.A. and lists http://piermarton.info/.

  • Davidson Gigliotti People

    Davidson Gigliotti, an original member of the alternative video collectives Videofreex and Media Bus, served as Director of Video at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York from 1975 to 1987 and is described as one of video’s pioneers. His single-channel tapes and multi-channel video installations study urban and rural environments to recreate the experience of place, and he produced anthologies of contemporary performance artists and musicians. Born in 1939, he attended the Rhode Island School of Design and New York University; he received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Creative Artists Public Service (CAPS) and held residencies at KTCA-TV Minneapolis, Visual Studies Workshop, Rochestor, and WXXI-TV Rochester; distribution noted as Electronic Arts Intermix Early Video Project (http://208.55.137.252/).
