Kim Tomczak

Kim Tomczak is a multidisciplinary artist primarily known for his work in performance, photography and video. Born in Victoria, B.C. in 1952, he graduated with honours from the Vancouver School of Art, now the Emily Carr College of Art, in 1975. He is a founding director of V Tape and is currently a Board Member of the Toronto Arts Council and the Alliance for Canada's Audio-Visual Heritage. Since 1983, Tomczak has worked in collaboration with Lisa Steele.

Their work has been the focus of a major survey and recognized with several awards for achievement. Their individual and collaborative work was the subject of a major survey exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1989-90. In 1993, Steele and Tomczak were recognized with two prestigious awards: the Bell Canada Award for excellence in the field of Canadian video art and a Toronto Arts Award (the Peter Herndorf Media Arts Award). In 1996, their most recent work received a world premiere at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

    Lisa Steele studied Literature at the University of Missouri and immigrated to Canada in 1968; her videotapes were shown internationally, including the Venice Biennale (1980) and Museum of Modern Art (NYC). She co-founded V tape and FUSE, engaged in anti-censorship from 1980, chaired the New Media Program at the Ontario College of Art and taught video from 1981, and served on the Art Gallery of Ontario Board of Trustees (1993–97).     Rebecca Dolan holds an MFA in Photography and Digital Imaging from Maryland Institute College of Art (1999) and a BFA from Colorado State University (1991); she is Assistant Professor in the Photography & New Media Department at Kansas City Art Institute. Her exhibitions include solo shows in Kansas City (2003 Field; 2004 White, working title) and screenings at the National Gallery Film Theatre (2002) and Goethe Institut (2001); her installations are multi-channel video works with dimensional sound, and her videography (1998–2001) includes collaborations with Patrick Wright.   • Barbara Sykes-Dietz People

    Barbara Sykes is a video artist who holds an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute (1979–81) and completed B.F.A. studies at the University of Illinois, Chicago (1974–79); her work spans video, computers and performance. Since 1975 her award-winning tapes have been shown worldwide at major museums, galleries and on broadcast and cable television; she was a featured artist in the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago exhibition Art in Chicago: 1945 to 1995 and has received numerous grants and artists residencies for research and videotape production in India, Japan, China, Australia, Spain and New York.

  • Pioneers of Digital Photography Bibliography

    Mary Ross curated Pioneers of Digital Photography at Open Space Gallery, Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1998 and lectured at the Video History conference at Syracuse University, Oct. 16–18, 1998; the exhibition was supported by the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and private foundations. The essay surveys 1960s–1980s artists who combined photographic processes with electronic and digital media, assembling 60 works by 18 artists. It documents technologies such as photocopiers, Kirilian photograms, Portapak recorders, video synthesizers and early computers at Experimental Television Center, citing practitioners Nam June Paik and Sonia Landy Sheridan.
