  Erik Barnouw (1908–2001) was a media historian and professor emeritus of dramatic arts at Columbia University; his publications include History of Broadcasting (1966), Documentary (1974), Tube of Plenty (1982), The International Encyclopedia of Communication (1989) and Conglomerates and the Media (1997), and his memoir Media Marathon was published in 1996 by Duke University Press.
