  New York based filmmaker Sarah Friedland received a BA in film and sociology from Sarah Lawrence College in 2003; she attended the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, and has worked with filmmakers in New York and abroad on socially minded and creative films. Editorial credits include Principal Editor on Free to Fly: the US— Cuba Link, a documentary by the award-winning director Estela Bravo; La Memoria es Vaga by Katie Halper; Las diarias porcelanas by La Vaughn Belle; she was Assistant Editor on The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo by Amy Stechler.

• Persheng Vaziri People

  Persheng Sadegh-Vaziri is an award-winning independent filmmaker born and raised in Tehran, Iran; she received a BA from Trinity College (Hartford, Ct.) and an MFA in Cinema Studies from New York University. She worked as a producer for Deep Dish TV on a series about the war in Iraq, for Trinity TV on documentaries about 9/11, and for Internews Network on programs promoting dialogue between societies in conflict; she also worked on the PBS series POV, taught film in Boston and New York, and curated a documentary film fest in Tehran. Her documentaries Journal from Tehran (1987), Far From Iran (1990), A Place Called Home (1998) and Women Like Us (2002) have been broadcast on PBS and are distributed by Women Make Movies.

• Dara Birnbaum People

  Dara Birnbaum is an internationally recognized video artist who received the American Film Institute's Maya Deren Award, fellowships from Princeton University and special recognition from Harvard University. Her work has been exhibited at Documenta, the Whitney Biennial, the Carnegie International, MoMA New York and Centre Georges Pompidou, and has appeared on broadcast television, MTV and in public spaces such as Grand Central Station. Her work is held in museum collections including MoMA and SFMOMA; she served as juror of the 2002 Video Kunst-preis and has held teaching fellowships and posts at Princeton.

• laura Kissel People

  Laura Kissel is a media artist working in film and the electronic and digital arts; she is cofounder of the Orphan Film Symposium and an associate professor of media arts at the University of South Carolina. Her documentary work explores social and political issues around landscape and land use, representation of place and history, and orphan films; she is in preproduction on a documentary about media representations of disability, eugenics, and the struggle for disability civil rights; she graduated in 1991 from Ithaca College's Department of Cinema and Photography.

  Ellen Spiro is an internationally recognized documentary filmmaker whose work has been broadcast worldwide; her awards include two Rockefeller Fellowships, a National Endowment for the Arts grant and a Whitney Museum Independent Study Fellowship. Her films include Roam Sweet Home (1996), an international co-production of Channel Four UK and ITVS; DiAna's Hair Ego (1990), produced for $564 while at the Whitney Independent Study Program and the first 8mm consumer-video documentary shown on U.S. television, later screened at the Whitney Biennial and MoMA; and Greetings From Out Here (1993), which won first prize at the USA Film Festival and was invited to Sundance.

• Norman Cowie People

  Norman Cowie is a video producer and professor of media theory and production whose work ranges from collaborative documentaries to video art; his work interrogates relations of power and domination and often employs documentary techniques, off-air appropriation, and short-form sound and text collage. Scenes from an Endless War, supported by Finishing Funds in 2002, received Best Experimental Documentary (tied) at the Iowa City International Documentary Festival, a Director's Citation at the Black Maria Film and Video Festival, and Best Short Film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival in 2003; his work is distributed by Video Data Bank and his website is www.normancowie.com.
