Michelle Coe

Michelle has worked in the worlds of independent film and theatre for nearly 10 years, including production, distribution, and artist support services. She recently worked in Marketing with First Run/Icarus Films. Prior to that, she was Program Director of the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF) for nearly five years, producing events and developing programs for artists across the U.S.

She has served on numerous screening committees and program juries (including the P.O.V. series for PBS), and has presented programs at various film festivals, including Sundance and South By Southwest. She has also held various positions in the production of independent film (Everyday People; Bigger Than Life: Toots Shor; Cosmopolitan) and theatre (Sara Moore's Show Ho; Above and Beyond the Valley of the Ultra-Showgirls).

Originally from Minneapolis, she was Membership/Education Director for the Independent Feature Project/Minneapolis-St. Paul (IFP/MSP), and administered the McKnight Fellowship for Screenwriters. As administrator of the Production Assistance Program, she is in charge of all WMM Fiscal Sponsorship filmmakers and related programs; she also develops online information services and programs educational workshops for the filmmaking public. She also works with the Marketing department on general WMM promotions and publicity.

    Anne-Marie Stein, former executive director of the Boston Film/Video Foundation (1988–2001), reviews BF/VF programs and operations and attributes the organization's closure to chronic undercapitalization, loss of major funders including MacArthur, constrained public support, limited fundraising capacity and short-term cash-flow pressures. She describes BF/VF's continuing education, exhibition (including the New England Film & Video Festival and Meet the Director), artists' resources and the Intervisions newsletter, and emphasizes lessons about organizational size, strategic planning, staff professional development and selective governance; she earned an MBA from Simmons and joined Northern Light Productions in April 2001.

  • Media Independents Push for Access Bibliography

    Independent video and film producers increased political organizing to gain programming and funding access; AIVF lobbied the Corporation for Public Broadcasting during its reorganization after the Carnegie Commission report and advocated a clear definition of independents and Program Fund set-asides. A dispute at WNET-Channel 13 over four peer-panel-selected films produced the Coalition To Make Public Television Public, meetings with president Jay Iselin on Feb. 11 and a protest at Lincoln Center on Feb. 24, and scrutiny of station finances. Independent feature filmmakers formed the Independent Feature Project (director Joy Pereths) after a New York Film Festival market (Sept. 1979); national organizing includes a Minnewaska meeting (April 1979) leading to a NAMAC conference in Boulder (May 29–31).

    Anne Marie Stein is Assoc. Dean of Professional and Continuing Education at the Massachusetts College of Art; from 2001-05 she was Director of Development for Northern Light Productions, overseeing business development and working on documentary projects. She served on national granting committees and panels and spent seven years on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the national coalition for media arts organizations, NAMAC; she co-founded the Boston International Festival of Women's Cinema and was co-director for many years of the New England Film & Video Festival.
