    Scott MacDonald holds a B.A. from De Pauw University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Florida; he received the Clark Award for Outstanding Scholarship, an NEH Fellowship, and was named an Anthology Film Archives Film Preservation honoree. He programmed events and film series at Anthology Film Archives, Pacific Film Archive, the Robert Flaherty Seminar, Centre Georges Pompidou and NEH summer institutes; his books include A Critical Cinema; The Garden in the Machine: A Field Guide to Independent Films about Place; Cinema 16: Documents Toward a History of the Film Society; Screen Writings; and Avant-Garde Film/Motion Studies; he has contributed to Film Quarterly, The Independent, Wide Angle, Afterimage and ISLE and edits the Wide Angle Books Series at Temple University Press.

  • Motion Perception in Movies and Painting: Towards a New Kinetic Art Bibliography

    Michael Betancourt examines Julian Hochberg and Virginia Brooks' argument in Movies in the Mind's Eye that cinematic motion is a cognitive gestalt process rather than an ocular-physiological effect, and he applies that model to painterly motion. He analyzes examples including Eadweard Muybridge's photographic studies, Rubens' portrait of Helene Fourment and Francis Bacon's Three Studies of Lucien Freud (1969), cites John Berger and Rudolf Arnheim, and discusses film, videotape, photography and flickering shutters as relevant technologies. The essay proposes a perceptually based kinetic art and includes bibliographic notes; the author is identified as an art critic and artist in Miami, Florida.
