The National Television and Video Preservation Foundation

The National Television and Video Preservation Foundation is providing in-kind support in 2004 to preserve and remaster 10 hours of very early videotapes from the Center's collection; the works were produced in the 1970s and showcase early analog and digital video imaging tools.

The project will focus on early instruments - those tools individually designed by artists and the collaboration of artists and engineers/technologists, modifications to existing technology, and innovative applications of commercial technology - and the collaborative relationships between artists and engineers, and the interdisciplinary nature of early media arts practice. The tapes which we are seeking to preserve feature important early video devices designed in the early to mid 1970s.

  • Reports to the Field Preservation

    Experimental Television Center convened Looking Back/Looking Forward on May 31–June 1, 2002 at Downtown Community Television Center in New York, bringing over 50 media arts professionals, conservators, technicians and artists to address physical preservation of independent electronic media, related tools and ephemera. Sessions led by BAVC, Artists Television Access, George Eastman House and MoMA examined remastering workflows (including 1/2” open reel), formats, selection strategies, economics, oral histories and web documentation; BAVC received NEA funding to produce a videotape preservation DVD. The Video History Project, launched 2000 and directed by Sherry Miller Hocking with major contribution from Mona Jimenez, maintains resource databases and commissioned papers including Video Preservation: The Basics.

  • Acknowledgements Preservation

    Video Preservation - The Basics is a general introduction to electronic media preservation for the independent media arts community; it was researched and written by Sherry Miller Hocking of the Experimental Television Center and by artist and independent preservation consultant Mona Jimenez. The project was funded by a Media Action Grant from Media Alliance, Inc and by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts; acknowledgements list Media Alliance (for excerpting the Magnetic Media Sourcebook) and co-editors Liss Platt and Mona Jimenez, Debby Silverfine, Claude Meyer and the Electronic Media and Film Program of NYSCA, David Jones of Dave Jones Design, and Independent Media Arts Preservation; February 2000.

    The National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture established a national Video Preservation Task Force.

  • Background and History Preservation

    Experimental Television Center produced this guide and organized the Video History Project, documenting early video art and community television in upstate New York (1968–1980) through oral histories, a website and the Video History: Making Connections conference (Syracuse University, October 1998). The text cites Media Alliance and publications such as Deirdre Boyle's Video Preservation and the Magnetic Media Preservation Sourcebook, and notes IMAP's 1999 formation with New York State Council on the Arts and Rockefeller Foundation support. It outlines archivist functions, videotape deterioration modes and chronology of preservation activities through 2002.

  • The Tapes are Disappearing Preservation

    Account of the deterioration and neglect of independently produced videotape since the 1960s, tracing preservation concerns to NEA support for the American Film Institute and the early Film and Television Archives Advisory Committee (later AMIA); it documents the finite lifespan of videotape, the dispersal of collections, and limited resources for care. The text lists preservation initiatives including BAVC’s 1995 remastering facility, IMAP’s 1999 founding, key publications and conferences, and announces a May 2002 symposium to address remastering, economics and collection assessment; named participants and funders include Deirdre Boyle, Debby Silverfine, Luke Hones, Mona Jimenez, the Library of Congress, NYS Council on the Arts and the Getty Foundation.

  • Introduction Preservation

    Looking Back/Looking Forward is a symposium on electronic media preservation organized by the Experimental Television Center; it invited 58 artists, conservators, media arts staff and technical experts and is an activity of the Center’s Video History Project (begun 1994). The Video History Website (launched 2000) hosts nine interrelated databases with about 3,500 records and a Bibliography of over 1,000 entries. The Preservation area includes the commissioned papers Video Preservation and Reel to Real; Bay Area Video Coalition, with NEA funding, will produce a DVD due end of 2002.
