Neval Cassidy
Naval Cassidy has been an instant cinema and sound performer for over fifteen years. Working on his own and with Valued Cu$tomer (Stackable Thumb) and The Hands of Orlak, a new group that combines live video with live percussion, he has been a consistent presence in New York's live video and performance scene. Recently, Naval returned to Brooklyn to perform five new works about current events.
The world keeps turning, and sometimes you feel you want off. Naval can transport you off this world without ever really leaving the room. Through his special blend of video performance, Instant Cinema, Naval pulls delirious visions out of discarded broken objects, simply placing each one under the watchful eye of his camera. As accompaniment, Naval draws out bubbles of noise from computers and radio broadcasts.
His video works and performances have traveled the world; most recently in Holland, Belgium, Canada, and England. Naval won a Jerome Foundation grant in 1993 when he created the world wide web site called "The Miserable Racetrack". Recently, he began doing gallery shows and small performances in Manhattan and Brooklyn. He calls this chamber video, and he explores the possibilities of small intimate performances, sometimes with just one special audience member.
