Summary

Vision and Television was exhibited at the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, from January 21 to February 22, 1970; the show was organized and its catalog foreword written by Russell Connor. The exhibition presented video and electronic works, including Frank Gillette (Amps, Volts and Watts), Nam June Paik with Charlotte Moorman (TV Bra for Living Sculpture) and Nam June Paik (The 9/23 Experiment, Still Life and Embryo for Wall to Wall TV).     TV as a Creative Medium was presented at Howard Wise Gallery May 17–June 14, 1969; the exhibition included works by Serge Boutourline (Telediscretion), Frank Gillette and Ira Schneider (Wipe Cycle), Nam June Paik (Participation TV) and Nam June Paik with Charlotte Moorman (TV Bra for Living Sculpture), and works by Earl Reiback, Paul Ryan, John Seery, Eric Siegel, Thomas Tadlock, Aldo Tambellini and Joe Weintraub. Howard Wise, in the introduction to the program notes, cites the obsolescence of the machine and the overwhelming effects of TV on culture and society.

    Ann-Sargent Wooster's catalog essay for the 25th Anniversary exhibition at Art in General (Nov 8–Jan 25, 1997) recounts the Experimental Television Center's history; the Center grew from the Student Experiments in Television program begun in 1969 at SUNY Binghamton by Ralph Hocking and formally organized in 1971, relocating to Owego in 1979 and hosting roughly 1,200 artists in 24-hour residencies. The Center constructed a Paik/Abe video synthesizer under Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe for WNET's TV Lab, developed image-processing hardware by David Jones and artist-oriented software interfacing with Amiga computers circa 1975; reminiscences name participants including Nam June Paik, Bill T. Jones and Doris Chase.

Discusses practitioners and works including Nam June Paik (Global Groove, Paik-Abe synthesizer, TV sculptures), Bill Viola (Hatsu Yume), Stan Brakhage, Bruce Connor, and Juan Downey; notes institutions and events such as the 1974 Open Circuits Conference at MoMA, WNET broadcasts, the Experimental Television Center, and the Whitney Museum.

    New Work in Abstract Video Imagery is an anthology of videotapes produced 1973–1977 and organized for the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse in 1977; it documents experiments with television, magnets, videosynthesizers, lasers and computers and includes works by Nam June Paik (magnet experiments; Paik/Abe videosynthesizer), Shuya Abe, Aldo Tambellini (Black Spiral, 1968), Peter Van Riper, Mary Lucier (Fire Writing), John Cage (Suite 212), Ron Hays and many Chicago-based practitioners. Production centers cited include the New Television Laboratory at WGBH, the Sandin Image Processor at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Experimental Television Center (Binghamton) and Bell Labs; the New York State Council on the Arts provided support. The exhibition was organized by Richard Simmons as an artists' cooperative with revenues divided equally among participants.
