Pete McPartlan

Pete McPartlan is an artist and experimental musician working with generative music software, soldering iron, vhs tapes, a pen and scraps of paper. Pete graduated from Hull School of Art in 2004. As an artist he has installed paper based work <<"Interconnected Monkey Typing Chambers" RED gallery, Hull>> performed live lo-fi video stuff <<"Whitebalance", Gage05 festival, Hull and Flicker Festival, Bristol>> and plays and records music under various aliases <> and has improvised with various Hull based collectives <> and also writes a nano-circulation fanzine "The Pitchforke."

I am an artist and experimental musician working with generative music software, soldering iron, VHS tapes, a pen and scraps of paper. I graduated from Hull School of Art in 2004 and have been living and working in Hull, UK since then. My work is concerned with the aesthetics and culture of redundant technology.

I am interested in video, not for its representational abilities but for its aesthetic and material qualities and for it as a system. Structuralists film makers of the 60s/70s sought to highlight celluloid's properties, emphasising surface, shadow and grain. Similarly I'm interested in idea of magnetic materialism, amplifying flaws and oddities inherent in the technology to expand outwards into the realm of the aesthetic and poetic.

Most recently I have been using a process where I pick up the em field from CRT TVs and amplify it to create live video performances and short video pieces. These performances combine and confuse the auditory and the visual, making stripped down, abstract, expanded cinematic works.

I also work in a curatorial role developing projects and screenings on a low budget centred on the (now disappearing) video aesthetic, under the name "The 2 Mile Quadruplex". He launched VisualLiving.com, co-founded 10 Gallon Productions and was Associate Director of the Electronic Music Foundation. He performed live video with INTERFACE and contributed compositions to the Frog Peak / Chris Mann CD Collaborations Project.

    Matt Underwood holds a BFA from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University; he works across print, video, sound, installation and performance. He collaborated with Richard Kostelanetz, creating a soundtrack for one of Kostelanetz's video poems; his videowork was included in the 2003 International Digital Arts Exhibition at Shangai University, and he has served as an instructor with the International Summer Workshop.

    Jacolby Satterwhite is a multimedia artist born in Columbia, South Carolina; he holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. He attended residencies at Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture, Harvestworks, and the Center For Photography at Woodstock and has been included in group exhibitions and performances at Exit Art, Rush Arts Gallery, The Kitchen, PS.1 MoMA, and The Smithsonian.     Brian Milbrand is a documentary video and performance/video artist born in Buffalo, NY. He is co-founder and curator of Kamikaze, a collaborative artist group and artspace that presented a season of twice-monthly micro-cinema events in 2002. His work has screened at Artists Television Access (San Francisco), Scribe Video Center and DUTV (Philadelphia), and at Burchfield Penny Art Gallery, Hallwalls and Squeaky Wheel in Buffalo; his performance work has been featured at Suburban Samizdat and Kamikaze.     Davidson Gigliotti, an original member of the alternative video collectives Videofreex and Media Bus, served as Director of Video at the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New York from 1975 to 1987 and is described as one of video’s pioneers. His single-channel tapes and multi-channel video installations study urban and rural environments to recreate the experience of place, and he produced anthologies of contemporary performance artists and musicians. Born in 1939, he attended the Rhode Island School of Design and New York University; he received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and Creative Artists Public Service (CAPS) and held residencies at KTCA-TV Minneapolis, Visual Studies Workshop, Rochestor, and WXXI-TV Rochester; distribution noted as Electronic Arts Intermix Early Video Project (http://208.55.137.252/).
