Peter Rose

Since 1968 Peter Rose has made over thirty films, tapes, performances and installations. Many of the early works raise intriguing questions about the nature of time, space, light, and perception and draw upon Rose's background in mathematics and on the influence of structuralist filmmakers. He subsequently became interested in language as a subject and in video as a medium and generated a substantial body of work that played with the feel and form of sense, concrete texts, political satire, oddball performance, and a kind of intellectual comedy.

Recent work has involved a return to an examination of landscape, time, and vision and takes the form of installation. Rose has been widely exhibited, both nationally and internationally, and has been included in shows at the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Biennial, the Centre Pompidou, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Film Society at Lincoln Center, and the Rotterdam International Film Festival. He has been awarded fellowships by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Pew Foundation, the Independence Foundation, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and is fond of writing descriptions in the third person.

As he has written: Some of us work in a proximate relation with our intended audiences, speaking familiar languages so that the archetypes of our culture may be recognized; and some work out a self-creating interiority from which, if we are lucky, we bring back the shape of a newly imagined alphabet of feeling.   • Peter Callas People

    Peter Callas has worked in film, video art and computer animation for over twenty years; his works are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Kunstmuseum Bonn and the Australian National Gallery, Canberra. He held screenings at Kunstverein Cologne and MoMA New York, and completed residencies at PS1, New York (1989) and the Zentrum f¸r Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe. He won awards including First Prize, Bonn Videonale and Golden Switchblade Award (both 1994); dLux media arts presented a twenty-year retrospective of his video works in 1999 titled Intiialising History.

  • Peter Hutton People

    Peter Hutton, B.F.A., M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute, taught at Hampshire College, Harvard University and SUNY Purchase; since 1984 he has been Professor of Film at Bard College. He is a filmmaker who has produced more than 20 films, mostly portraits of cities and landscapes worldwide; his work has been shown in major museums and festivals in the United States and Europe, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Biennial (1985, 1991, 1995, 2004). Since 1986 he has continued a series of landscape portraits of the Hudson River Valley and is developing projects in Bangladesh and Iceland; his grants include the National Endowment for the Arts, DAAD Berliner, Rockefeller Foundation, Dutch Film Critics Award and a Guggenheim Fellowship.

  • Daniel Eisenberg People

    Daniel Eisenberg is Professor and Chair of Film, Video, and New Media (1994) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and holds a BA (1976) from Binghamton University; his work has been exhibited and screened at the Museum of Modern Art (New York), University of Amsterdam, Goldsmiths College (University of London), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York), the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival, Pacific Film Archive (Berkeley), Musee du Cinema (Brussels) and Filmmuseum (Munich). His works are held in the collections of Centre Georges Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art, Freunde der Deutschen Kinemathek and the Nederlands Film Museum; awards include an Illinois Arts Council Artists Fellowship, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship and a DAAD Berlin Fellowship; online: www.danieleisenberg.com.

  • Vincent Grenier People

    Vincent Grenier, born in Québec City, is an experimental filmmaker since the early 1970s who received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute; his films have screened in the United States, Canada and Europe. He received production grants from the Canada Council and New York agencies CAPS, NYFA and ETC, has made over two dozen films and videos including HERE, COLOR STUDY and FEET, won festival prizes and had seven films included in the Whitney Museum American Century Film program; his work is in the Donell media library and other national collections, and he teaches as Professor of Cinema at Binghamton University.

  • "Vision and Television" Chronology

    Vision and Television was exhibited at the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, from January 21 to February 22, 1970; the show was organized and its catalog foreword written by Russell Connor. The exhibition presented video and electronic works, including Frank Gillette (Amps, Volts and Watts), Nam June Paik with Charlotte Moorman (TV Bra for Living Sculpture) and Nam June Paik (The 9/23 Experiment, Still Life and Embryo for Wall to Wall TV). Other participants included Les Levine, Aldo Tambellini, USCO/Intermedia and Videofreex.
