Seth Nehil

Seth Nehil (b. 1973) is an american visual, performance and sound artist. He started to work with sound around 1990 using found objects and instruments, old records, reel-to-reel machines, discarded magnetic tape and other detritus. Then, Alial Straa was formed in 1994 by John Grzinich and Seth Nehil as a studio project involving Grzinich's handmade amplified piano wire instruments and Nehil's analogue tape treatments and instruments.

The heart of Straa music is the topographical contour of an immense plain -- a 'balanced field'. He also worked with N D magazine from 1995-2000 as a writer and artistic contributor. He received a BA in studio art from the University of Texas at Austin in 1998 and now resides in Portland, Oregon where he works as a teacher's assistant in a Montessori elementary classroom. He currently continues collaborations with John Grzinich, Olivia Block and Michael Northam in sound, performance and organization.

    Jonathan Zalben is an artist-composer working at the intersection of interactive art and music composition; he designs pieces that combine live instruments and recorded sound so the audience functions as performer. He holds a BA in Music from Yale and an MA in music composition and multimedia from New York University and studied at Juilliard Pre-College; he has received grants from organizations including Experimental TV Center and ASCAP. He was a 2000 research fellow at Argonne National Laboratory, in 2003 was in residence at STEIM, and his Compound Pilot collaboration won the Classic Web Award at SXSW 2006.

    David Galbraith is a New York–based composer, performer and media artist working in sound installations, video, software and performances with self-built analog electronics. Composition 2005 No. 1 was shown at Diapason and is slated for a Diapason DVD; he received a 2006 Finishing Funds grant from the Experimental Television Center/NYSCA for lgOpre and enhanced it at STEIM in 2007. His work has been exhibited at P.S.1/MoMA, New Museum and KW Institute; he holds an M.F.A. (California Institute of the Arts, 1996) and a B.S. (University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1988).

    David Weinstein is a composer and multimedia artist whose musical and site-specific installation works have been shown worldwide; his musical practice juxtaposes sound effects, traditional and non traditional instruments, synthetic sound, ancient and exotic tunings, and noise. As a keyboardist he has recorded and performed with Shelley Hirsch, Elliott Sharp, John Zorn, Ned Rothenberg and Rhys Chatham; his theatrical, installation and multimedia pieces have received grants and awards. He participated in a long collaboration with the live video performance group The Poool and works with Doris Vila on animated, multi-user, multi-screen responsive environment installations cited at Prix Ars Electronica 2002.

    Joe Reinsel composed digital audio-visual works presented in England, Scotland and US cities including Los Angeles and New York; his pieces use live improvised audio and video (MAX/MSP/Jitter, NATO) with samples from field recordings and recent compositions reflect on the precariousness of nature. He holds an M.F.A. in Electronic Arts from iEAR Studios, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and an M.A. in Music composition and Music technology from Radford University and is Digital Audio Specialist at the Brown Foundation Digital Media Center, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.
