Sorrel Hays

Sorrell Hays frequently incorporates video into her concerts, and has also produced film and video documentary and art.

The video =House= which she directed was part of =Sound Shadows= concert that opened the 1990 Whitney Museum Acoustica Festival, and was shown at Women in the Director's Chair Chicago.

With filmmaker George Stoney, she coproduced the hour documentary =Southern Voices: A Composerps Exploration= that won Blue Ribbon from the American Film Festival.

Her documentary on the women's peace camp at Seneca, New York, =C.D., The Ritual of Civil Disobedience= was shown at the National Video Festival and in a traveling exhibition of the American Film Institute.

Her film =M.O.M. and P.O.P.= was commissioned and premiered by the Radio Bremen Festival Musica Nova, and has been shown frequently in the U.S., including at Film Forum, New York, and the Women's Studies National Conference at Rutgers.

She produced the art video =Reconstruction= at Flea Theater/Roulette and Café Cornelia in New York City including live vocal and electronics interaction with soprano Kristin Norderval. SORREL HAYS's new comic theater =Queen Bee-ing, The Bee Opera= is the fourth of her music dramas concerned with gender places and spaces.

Sorrel wrote =Dream in Her Mind= and =Love in Space= on commission from West German Broadcasting Cologne.

The Chattanooga Opera commissioned her to write =The Glass Woman=, which was produced in New York in 1993 as one of Opera America's Opera for the Nineties and Beyond.

Her spoof on American busyness =Something (To Do) Doing=, for 15 actor/chanters and scat singer, was exhibited in the Whitney Museum's first audio art show in 1990.

Her music and videos featured in the Copenhagen Festival, Yapi Kredi Festival Istanbul, Kassel Documenta, Heideberg Festival Blau, and Spoleto. Sorrel's music is recorded on New World, Finnadar Atlantic, Folkways, Tellus, Opus One, Townhall, Centaur and Wergo labels.

  • The Whitney Museum and the Shaping of Video Art: An Interview with John Hanhardt Interview

    John Hanhardt is curator of film and video at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; he integrated video into the Whitney’s exhibition program and curated the Nam June Paik retrospective in 1982. Trained at NYU with a MoMA internship, he became Whitney department head in 1974 after serving at the Walker Art Center; he organized Projected Video (1975) and Re-Vision (1979) and placed video in Biennials from 1973. He secured Rockefeller Foundation funding to equip the theater, is writing Expanded Form in Film and Video (due spring 1983), and pursued touring and distribution via the AFA.

    Sarah Halpern holds a BA from Bard College (2005) and served as Events Coordinator for free103point9 while working as a projectionist at Anthology Film Archives. Her recent performances and exhibitions include Wave Farm, Monkeytown, Marquis Dancehall and The Nowhere Gallery (OR). She hosts and curates The Somnambutone, an online radio program of music composed specifically to fall asleep to, and curated Summer Solstice at Socrates Sculpture Park from the EAI catalog, integrating a live soundtrack by free 103 affiliated artists.
