Steve Seid

Steve Seid is the video curator at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley, CA. He also pursues video preservation and writes on electronic media.

Seid was co-curator of the Ant Farm retrospective currently touring the U.S. and Europe, staged the first live PowerPoint competition, and is co-editing a book (with accompanying exhibition) on the 50-year history of San Francisco avant-garde media.

They trace NCET from its 1967 founding at KQED as the Experimental TV Project with NEA and Rockefeller funding to its 1969 renaming and CPB support; Brice Howard is cited as director.     Alan Moore, an ex-artist turned scholar, describes his work in and with archives and notes that his personal archive includes a video distribution business. His dissertation traces politicized artists' organizations from the Art Workers Coalition through Art & Language, Artists Meeting for Cultural Change, Collaborative Projects, Political Art Documentation (PADD) and Group Material, spanning roughly 1969 to 1984. He discusses archival mortality, obsolete magnetic-media preservation and digital promises; he recounts a Syracuse experimental-video conference involving Ardele Lister and Ralph Hocking (Experimental TV Center) and references installations by Michael Smith and Josh White that invoke obsolete technologies.

  • Marita Sturken People

    Marita Sturken is Associate Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California, and author of Tangled Memories (California, 1997), Thelma & Louise (British Film Institute, 2000), Practices of Looking (with Lisa Cartwright, Oxford, 2001), and co-editor of Technological Visions (Temple, 2004). She holds a PhD from the History of Consciousness program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and has published in journals including Representations, Public Culture, History and Theory, and Afterimage. She has written extensively about video art and the emergence of video, including catalogues for the Museum of Modern Art and Electronic Arts Intermix, and co-curated with Robert Riley the exhibition Machine Media: Steina and Woody Vasulka at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1996.
