Dara Greenwald

Dara Greenwald is an interdisciplinary artist with an MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago & a BA in Women's Studies from Oberlin College. She was part-time faculty at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Film/Video/New Media department from 2003-2005 & worked as the Distribution Manager at the Video Data Bank from 1998 - 2005. She is pursuing an MFA at RPI in Electronic Arts in 2007.

Dara takes an experimental and socially engaged approach to art making & is interested in arts potential to contest dominant power and thinking in the hopes of contributing to the transformation of social relations. She is influenced by punk do-it-yourself culture and the anarchist values of mutual aid and non-hierarchical collective action. Combining this with the careerist individualism that official art, academics, and neo-liberal capitalism breed, she spends much of her time negotiating contradicting notions of "the good life."

Her single channel videos have screened widely at venues such as Yerba Buena Center for the Arts/SF, Ocularis/NY, the Liverpool Bienniele/UK, Eyebeam/NY, Videolisboa/Portugal, the Aurora Picture Show/Houston, & the WORM/Holland. Her writing has appeared in Clamor, Gurl.com, the Journal of Aesthetics & Protest, & Bad Subjects & her zine appeared in the Mobilivre traveling book exhibit 2004. She is a founding member of the tactical media group, Pink Bloque.

Pink Bloque has appeared at many protests and in various press including the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, & on NPR. Dara has appeared as guest speaker at venues including University of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago, 16Beaver Art Space/NY, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, & Undeniable Evidence/Montreal. As a curator, she has presented programs at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Mess Hall/Chicago, Woodstock Center for Photography, Ann Arbor Film Festival, & Cinematexas. She has collaboratively organized large-scale experimental social convergences including Ladyfest Midwest, Version Festival, and Pilot TV Chicago. http://www.daragreenwald.com/

    Ayoka Chenzira is a filmmaker and media artist regarded as the first African-American woman animator and among the first to produce and direct a 35mm feature, Alma's Rainbow, which Billboard listed among top home video rentals (May 1998); her work is in collections including the Museum of Modern Art.     Beth Berolzheimer is a Chicago-based media artist and activist who produces videos, photographs and multimedia installations; her thirty-year career engages early European filmmaking, documentary and narrative film theory, art history, feminist and semiotic ideologies and a personal post-colonial critique. She was a ten-year member of Women In The Director's Chair and collaborated with Beyondmedia on videotapes about battered women and the NGO Forum for Women in China and documented post-glasnost rebuilding by Jewish women in Russia and the Ukraine. She introduced the first Avid digital non-linear editing systems to Columbia College Film/Video in 1993, is an Avid Certified Instructor and has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia College.

  • Courtney Rile People

    Courtney Rile is an artist, curator and arts coordinator based in Syracuse, NY; her video art has been shown internationally and locally, including the first Syracuse International Film and Video Festival. In 2005 she curated the moving-images program Videohm at an upscale lounge and bar in Syracuse, presenting nearly 300 hours of international experimental film and video and VJ work; she also coordinated the exhibition Clement Greenberg In Syracuse: Then & Now at ThINC's Company Gallery that year. She is Gallery Coordinator at Delavan Art Gallery and holds an A.A. in TV/Radio/Film from Montgomery County Community College, PA, and a B.F.A. in Video Art from Syracuse University, NY.

  • Lauren Cornell People

    Lauren Cornell is Executive Director of Rhizome and oversees the organization's programs to promote and contextualize new media art. She started with Rhizome in May 2005. Previously she worked as a curator, writer and arts administrator in New York, including on the Andy Warhol Film Project at the Whitney Museum and as Executive Director of Ocularis from 2002–2004; she also worked as a youth media educator and organizer, has been published in international and online art outlets, and has curated screenings, exhibitions and performances at venues in New York, London and Warsaw.

  • Michele Thursz People

    Michele Thursz is an independent curator and director of Post Media Network; in 1999 she co-founded and directed Moving Image Gallery, NYC. Recent projects include a collaboration in a production with the electronic orphanage and artist Miltos Manetas and a guest curator role at the New Museum's Media Z Lounge organizing Cin-o-matic- Memory and the Cinematic Perception, which examined the impact of new technologies on the cinematic experience. She is organizing a group show entitled In Medias Res: Technology's Impact on Artistic Practice at Exit Art, NYC; she has consulted for http://www.Turbulence.org, a net art initiative, and for bitforms gallery, NYC, on marketing and distribution of software related art.

  • De-Fantasizing the Profession and Re-Public-izing Cinemas or Holding on to the Real Bibliography

    Plenary address to the Society for Cinema Studies, Chicago, March 9, 2000; delivered by a film educator with two decades in a four-year undergraduate production program. The speaker maps an expanded field—film schools, communications, arts and medical curricula—and moving-image media (film, video, CD-ROM, web, installations), and diagnoses threats from corporatization, distance learning and declining nonprofit exhibition. Citing exchanges with NAMAC, Women Make Movies and the Robert Flaherty Seminar and referencing 1989 political events and global violences, they call for alliances with media-arts centers and offer ten programmatic wishes including anti-racist feminist politics, tenure lines and larger rental and programming budgets.
