Don Bernier

Don Bernier has been making both experimental and documentary media work since the early 1990s. A Maine native, Bernier received a BFA at Kansas City Art Institute before going on to earn a graduate degree in Media Study at SUNY-Buffalo in 1994. From 1994 to 2001, Bernier taught media production and theory in colleges and community-based technology centers in western New York, the San Francisco Bay Area and greater Boston. Throughout this period, Bernier continued to make installation and time-based artwork which has been exhibited across North America.

In late 2001, Bernier and his wife Tina Erickson relocated to New York City to focus more on documentary film and video production. Since then, he has been fortunate enough to work with such PBS filmmakers as Stephen Ives and David Grubin. In New York, Bernier has completed several of his own documentary projects which have screened at film and video festivals nationwide. http://mimeticmedia.com

  • Educational Communication Centers and the Television Arts Chronology

    Conference Educational Communication Centers and the Television Arts convened at SUNY Albany on November 21-22, 1974; coordinated by Gerald O'Grandy of the Center for Media Study at SUNY Buffalo. The stated purpose was to present developments in the video arts and related technology and to outline ways communication centers can serve developing media artists on their campuses and stimulate media activities in the arts and humanities. Presenters included O'Grady, Steina Vasulka (Center for Media Study, U of Buffalo), Tom DeWitt, Paul Kaufman (NCET at KQED), Fred Barzyk (Television Workshop at WGBH), David Loxton (TV Lab at WNET), Ed Emshwiller, Joel Chadabe and representatives from the Experimental Television Center and NYS Council on the Arts.

  • Scott Nygren People

    Scott Nygren received a BA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1968 and a PhD from SUNY-Buffalo in 1982; he joined the Film and Media Studies Program at UF in 1990 after roles at SUNY Buffalo, the Museum of Modern Art and the University of Toledo. He has lived in Japan and Paris and authored Time Frames: Japanese Cinema and the Unfolding of History (University of Minnesota Press, 2007); he has published essays in books and journals such as Wide Angle and produced video art tapes and installations.

  • Elmer Ploetz People

    Elmer Ploetz is a videomaker, professor and print journalist from Eden, N.Y.; he has worked for The Buffalo News since 1985 as a reporter and copy editor and has written extensively about the arts, especially video and music. He created The News' first on-line videos in spring 2007 and has taught as an adjunct at SUNY Fredonia since 2002; he will leave The News in August to begin a tenure track position at Fredonia and help develop a convergence-based journalism program emphasizing research and storytelling across media. Ploetz received an MA from the University at Buffalo in 2006 in American Studies with an emphasis on documentary studies; his thesis project, James Blue, Buffalo and the Complex Urban Documentary, employed both print and video and publication is pending.

  • Bernard Roddy People

    Bernie Roddy is a philosopher and filmmaker who taught college philosophy and media courses and earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Rochester (1995) and an MFA in Media Study from the University at Buffalo (2003). He produced 16 mm animated and dramatic films—including Truth (1998), Relativism (1999), Fluxus Cartoon (2000), Time and Object (2001) and the MFA thesis Dire Mastery (2003)—and made video works The Gift and The Great Confinement (2004). His work screened at festivals such as Ann Arbor, Cinematexas and the Black Maria, and he received a 2003 Experimental Television Center Finishing Fund.

  • Hank Linhart People

    Hank Linhart is a video documentarian and chairs Media Arts at Pratt Institute; he is a former Brooklyn waterfront activist and producer of video documentaries and video art. He holds a B.A. (Roanoke College), a B.F.A. (SUNY Fredonia) and an M.A.H. (SUNY Buffalo). He received NYSCA Grants (1985, 1990) and New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships (1983, 1989); his work was exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Kitchen, The American Center in Paris and on PBS; he was artist in residence at the Experimental Television Center.

  • Bob Harris People

    Bob Harris holds a BA from Colgate University and an MFA from the University of California, San Diego; he served as Artistic Director of the NY State Education Department's Summer School of the Media Arts and taught at Ithaca College, UCSD, and Palomar College. He helped found the Video Department at Anthology Film Archives, was Video Curator at Anthology and PS #1 in Queens, NY from 1979 to 1986, and founded at Anthology the first video preservation project in the nation; as a film and video maker his work, including COYOTE, has won festival awards and been shown at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea in Rome, Exit Art, Anthology Film Archives, and Palais de Beux Arts in Brussels.
