Katy Chevigny

Big Mouth Productions was founded in 1997 by Katy Chevigny and Julia Pimsleur to produce provocative and engaging social-issue documentaries and to provide production services for U.S. and international clients. Since its inception, Big Mouth has produced 6 feature-length documentaries that cover topics ranging from the criminal justice system to alternative healing, and has worked with numerous clients in the production of film and video work. Big Mouth's films have played at festivals around the world with premieres at the Sundance Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, South by Southwest Film Festival and the Hollywood Black Film Festival.

We have garnered awards at Cinema Du Reel Film Festival, Outfest LA, Urbanwold Film Festival, New York Latino Film Festival, the Newark Black Film Festival, the National Council on Crime and Delinquency and we have been nominated for IDA awards. Big Mouth's films have been broadcast on HBO Signature, Cinemax and public television. Our funders include the Independent Television Service, the National Black Programming Consortium, the Ford Foundation, the Soros Documentary Fund, the Jerome Foundation, the Funding Exchange/Paul Robeson Fund for Independent Media, the Donnet Fund, the ET Harmax Foundation, the Playboy Foundation, the Women in Film Foundation, the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation and numerous generous individuals.

Katy Chevigny co-founded Big Mouth Productions in 1997 with long-time friend and colleague Julia Pimsleur. Chevigny's producing credits include the award-winning documentaries Innocent Until Proven Guilty, Nuyorican Dream, Brother Born Again and Outside Looking In: Transracial Adoption in America. Chevigny produced and directed the one-hour documentary Journey to the West: Chinese Medicine Today. Before founding Big Mouth Productions, Chevigny produced and directed advocacy videos at the Chicago Video Project, including The Chicago Jobs and Living Wage Campaign and Cabrini Green: Mixed In, not Mixed Out. She is a graduate of Yale University and the Chicago Community Film Workshop. She currently directs and produces films at Big Mouth Productions.

She recently finished the film Deadline, which she co-directed with Kirsten Johnson, and which premiered at Sundance 2004. Her latest project is The Dishes, which she is producing and directing. She also oversees operations for MediaRights.org. https://bigmouthproductions.com

  • Julie Gustafson People

    Julie Gustafson is a pioneering video-documentary maker who produced several major documentaries for public television; in 1978 she became co-director, with John Reilly, of Global Village and co-founded the Documentary Film Festival of New York. Her social-issue work includes the 60-minute public-television film Abortion: Across the Barricades and national PBS broadcasts Giving Birth, Pursuit of Happiness, and Casting the First Stone. Born in 1949, she holds a B.A. from Brandeis, received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts grant, and lives in New Orleans.

    The New York State Council on the Arts Media Program (1987–88), directed by Dai Sil Kim-Gibson until February 1988 with Arthur Tsuchiya acting, administered a $1,570,000 allocation and earmarked over 25% ($400,897) for individual artists and independent documentary producers. The Program prioritized production and audience development for emerging, minority and upstate artists; it funded exhibitions, services, regrant programs and operating support with grants to Black Filmmaker Foundation, World Institute of Black Communications, Women Make Movies (Starrett City project) and Film News Now ($20,364). Exhibition, regrant and operating awards supported centers such as CEPA, Visual Studies Workshop, Experimental Television Center and Film/Video Arts and leveraged $54,500 in matching funds.

  • Gretjen Clausing People

    Gretjen Clausing worked for over 18 years in independent media exhibition; from 1999 to 2004 she was program director of Film at the Prince, where she created and ran a repertory film program, and in fall 2004 she joined Scribe Video Center as program director and producer of the 2005 National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture Conference. She served as coordinator of the Philadelphia Independent Film/Video Association, was filmmaker/facilitator on two Scribe Video Center community visions projects and publicist for the inaugural year of Street Movies. She cocreated and produced the television series Big Tea Party, aired on DUTV since January 1999 and on Free Speech TV since 2004; she graduated from Ithaca College in 1986.

  • Kathy Brew People

    Kathy Brew works in media and contemporary art; she directed Thundergulch at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council from 1997 to 2001 and served on New York new media advisory committees. She sits on Eyebeam Atelier's Curatorial Committee and was Exhibition Director for Beta Launch. As a video-maker she collaborated with Roberto Guerra on work shown at the MIT Media Lab exhibition ID/entity Portraits in the 21st Century, which was selected for the 2003 International Festival of Art on Film in Montreal; she has received two Emmys (1999, 2000).

  • Nicole Betancourt People

    Nicole Betancourt is Executive Director of MediaRights.org; her first film, Before you go: A Daughter's Diary, premiered on HBO in 1996 and won an Emmy for Outstanding News and Documentary Individual Achievement, a Golden Spire at the San Francisco Int'l Film Festival, and two Cable Ace nominations. She produced the feature documentary 90 Miles about how relationships within a Cuban family are shaped by the U.S.–Cuba rift; she was Associate/Field Producer for the PBS series The Quiet Revolution and Producer/Director of the educational video Changing Course to aid survivors of Hurricane Mitch. She is a member of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers and serves on the board of New York Women in Film and Television.
