Nicole Betancourt

Nicole Betancourt is the Executive Director of MediaRights.org, a website designed to promote the use of media for social change. Her first film, "Before you go: A Daughter's Diary," premiered on HBO in 1996 and won an Emmy for "Outstanding News and Documentary Individual Achievement," a Golden Spire at the San Francisco Int'l Film Festival, and two Cable Ace nominations. Betancourt has produced another feature documentary entitled "90 Miles" about how the relationships within a Cuban family are shaped by the rift between the U.S. and Cuba.

Betancourt was an Associate/Field Producer for the PBS series "The Quiet Revolution" and Producer/Director of an educational video to aid survivors of hurricane Mitch entitled "Changing Course." Currently, she is a member of the National Association of Latino Independent Producers and on the board of New York Women in Film and Television. www.MediaRights.org.

She co-organized Xchange TV to package and distribute Nicaraguan video during U.S. military intervention in Central America in the '80s, was advocacy director for the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers in the early '90s and later directed Berkeley Community Media in Berkeley, California. She holds a master's in Communications and Mass Culture from Hunter College CUNY and taught media studies at Ramapo College and the University of San Francisco.

    Linda Gibson is Executive Director of Medial Alliance and an arts administrator and artist. She worked in distribution at California Newsreel as Director of the African American Perspectives; served as Program Analyst at New York State Council on the Arts (Electronic Media and Film Program) and was Video Technical Director for Women's Interart Center. She taught at California College of Arts and Crafts and held media directorships at Middlesex and Union County Colleges; she co-founded San Francisco experimental media consortium X-Factor, curated for San Francisco Cinemateque/Yerba Buena and the New Jersey Student Film and Video Festival, and her video Last Tape (for my friends) premiered at the 1996 Flaherty Film Seminars.

    Jody Lafond is a video artist and independent producer whose internationally exhibited experimental videos and activist documentaries have shown at Art in General, the New York Video Festival and the Images Video Festival; she received a NYSCA Media Grant (2001) and NYFA Video Fellowships (1988, 1992). She has produced documentaries and community media since 1989 with groups including 8 mm News Collective and Media Coalition for Reproductive Rights, taught filmmaking at University of Oklahoma (Visiting Assistant Professor, 1987–1988) and University at Buffalo (Teaching Assistant, 1984–1986), and held a Visual Studies Workshop ARE residency (1996) and Experimental Television Center finishing funds (1992, 1995, 1997).

  • Marie Nesthus People

    Marie Nesthus is Director of the Donnell Media Center at the New York Public Library and holds a doctorate in Cinema Studies from New York University; she has worked on distribution and exhibition of avant-garde and documentary films with a focus on preservation and exhibition. Under her leadership the Donnell Media Center became an archive and study center for independent film while continuing to circulate videos and other audiovisual materials to the public. She has served on the Film Advisory Committee of the American Federation of Art and on the boards of the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, the American Film Festival and the St. Petersburg (Russia) Non-fiction Film Festival; in June 2002 she received the LEO award for lifetime achievement at the Flaherty Film Seminar.
