Kobland was born in the Bronx. He has studied architecture, art and philosophy. He has been making film and video since the mid 1970s. Graduated in Art with a minor in Philosophy from Union College, Schenectady, New York, 1969. Attended Columbia University School of Architecture, 1967-68. Since 1975, Mr. Kobland has produced film and video artworks, (most recently, ARISE! WALK DOG, which was supported by the Finishing Funds Program of the Experimental Television Center, and has subsequently shown in the World-Wide Video Festival, Amsterdam, Lucarno Video-Art, the Rotterdam Film Festival, the Berlin International Forum, the 8th Media Biennial in Geneva*, the Film+Arch Biennial in Graz*, Austria, the San Francisco Film Festival, Golden Gate Awards*, the Vienna Viennale, the Montreal Film Festival and CinemaTexas, Austin*). He has also produce a number of performance/media pieces for theatrical presentation in collaboration with The Wooster Group, the New York based experimental theater. Most recently a documentary and performance DVD of the Group's 1999 production HOUSE/LIGHTS. Mr. Kobland's cinematography credits include a range of documentary works on artists (including Joan Mitchell, Chuck Close and Louise Bourgeois) and on contemporary art for PBS and ZDF-Germany.
