Natalia Almada

Natalia Almada (Women Direct 25th Anniversary featured filmmaker) is a documentary filmmaker based in Mexico and New York City. Her work is dedicated to making innovative, thought-provoking documentaries that explore cross-cultural issues. Her first documentary, the experimental production All Water Has a Perfect Memory, received numerous awards and is currently broadcast on the Sundance Channel and distributed by Women Make Movies.

Al otro lado, a documentary about corridos, immigration, and drug trafficking, was shot by Chuy Chavez. The General is a personal historical documentary presently under development about the legacy of President Plutarco Elias Calles as told through his daughter and his great-granddaughter, the filmmaker. Almada is also a professional film editor for long-form documentaries. She works bilingually in Spanish and English.

    Margarita De la Vega-Hurtado is Executive Director of International Film Seminars, organizers of the Flaherty Film Seminar; she holds a Doctorate in American Culture with a focus on Film Studies from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she was an Adjunct Professor. She has taught at the University of California in Santa Cruz (Merrill College) and has programmed, curated, and presented film programs in Latin American and Latino cinema, independent American cinema, and documentary cinema; she has published papers on those subjects as well as on Colombian cinema, Louis Malle, and Luis Bunuel.

  • Ayoka Chenzira People

    Ayoka Chenzira is a filmmaker and media artist regarded as the first African-American woman animator and among the first to produce and direct a 35mm feature, Alma's Rainbow, which Billboard listed among top home video rentals (May 1998); her work is in collections including the Museum of Modern Art. She founded Red Carnelian Films and taught at the City college of New York, serving as Chair of Media & Communication Arts (1997–2001). She co-created the College's MFA in Media Arts Production (1995) and in 2001 accepted the William and Camille Cosby Endowed Chair of Fine Arts at Spelman College.
