Pamela Hawkins

Pamela Susan Hawkins has shown her time based works in such venues as the European Media Arts Festival, Osnabr¸ck, Germany, the WRO 97 Festival in Wroclaw, Poland, Art in General in New York city, Mobius in Boston and the National Poetry Video Festival in Chicago. She recently toured in central Europe. Her 15 year practice as an artist encompasses video, audio, digital, printmaking and photography. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from Rochester Institute of Technology and an MAH in Media Study and Fine Art Photography from the University at Buffalo.

Pamela's employment has taken her from Artistic Director at Pyramid Arts Center in Rochester to Experimental Video Instructor at Rhode Island School of Design to Video/Audio Instructor at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Oslo, Norway. She has had residencies at the Experimental Television Center in Owego, New York and NOTAM in Oslo, Norway to make time based visual and aural works. Pamela currently teaches Drawing, Contemporary Art History and Video at N.Y.S.C.C. and is Assistant to the Directors of the Institute for Electronic Arts at Alfred University. She is the founder and co-instructor of the annual International Student Residency program at the Experimental Television Center.

    Video History: Making Connections examined three decades of independent video since the late 1960s and opened with Video Rewind, organized by Deirdre Boyle; panels included Paul Ryan, Barbara London (MOMA video curator) and Parry Teasdale, with screenings such as Proto Media Primer (1970) and Calligrams (1970). A concurrent Video Preservation meeting, involving Mona Jimenez and referencing MOMA’s 1991 preservation meeting, addressed cataloging, funding and technical support; David Ross delivered a keynote at Henriks Chapel on Net Art and video’s institutional absorption. Pamela Hawkins organized a Resource Room displaying early analog and digital recording and playback equipment, processors and period publications, and panels treated writing and teaching video history.

    Barbara Sykes is a video artist who holds an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute (1979–81) and completed B.F.A. studies at the University of Illinois, Chicago (1974–79); her work spans video, computers and performance. Since 1975 her award-winning tapes have been shown worldwide at major museums, galleries and on broadcast and cable television; she was a featured artist in the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago exhibition Art in Chicago: 1945 to 1995 and has received numerous grants and artists residencies for research and videotape production in India, Japan, China, Australia, Spain and New York.

    Lauren Petty is a media artist and teacher working in sound, installation and film; she earned an MA in Video Art & Performance from NYU's Gallatin school in 1999 and is Chief Video Engineer at Harvestworks Media Arts Center. She teaches at The New School, the International Center of Photography and Pratt Institute and produces multiple-channel video/sound installations, single-channel works, interactive video scores and collaborative projects with The Wooster Group. Her work has been exhibited and screened at institutions including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Brooklyn Museum; she has received grants and fellowships, including two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, and residencies at MacDowell and Yaddo.

    Blithe Riley is a video, performance and installation artist whose work combines narrative fragments with systemic structures and examines the operations of spectatorship; recent projects investigate space, navigation and perception in urban environments and seek to reveal dynamics of power, design and the shifting city landscape from unusual viewpoints.
