Sally Berger

Sally Berger is a video, film, and new media curator, lecturer, and writer. She specializes in the areas of experimental video and non-fiction media. She is an Assistant Curator in the Department of Film and Video at The Museum of Modern Art (1986 to the present) and an independent curator.

She was Executive Director of IFS from 1989-94. She is an international guest lecturer and programmer and writes on non-fiction practices, video art, and new media. She received her M.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University in 1999 and B.A. from Fordham College at Lincoln Center in 1986.

She collaborated on projects and exhibitions with composer Will Redman and Termite TV; her work has been screened internationally and in the US, and since September 2002 she has been Media Arts Director at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY.

    Barbara London becomes assistant curator in the Department of Film, Museum of Modern Art. Her responsibilities include the permanent collection, which holds over 400 titles; the as-yet unopened video study center; the newly launched circulating video library; and Video Viewpoints, an on-going lecture series with in-person appearances by video artists.

  • Video Preservation: Securing the Future of the Past Preservation

    Media Alliance launched a video preservation initiative in 1991 and, in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts, convened a symposium at the Museum of Modern Art on June 14, 1991; over 60 participants from as far as San Francisco and Toronto attended and MoMA sponsored an evening screening organized by Barbara London and Sally Berger. Presenters included Elizabeth Scheines, Leanne Mella, Mark Schubin, David Shulman and Deborah Silverfine; topics covered collection assessment, cataloging (MARC and NAMID), conservation technology, cleaning methods, formats and remastering costs. Media Alliance surveyed over 200 people and solicited funding support from NYSCA, NEA, NAMAC, CCUMC, the Benton Foundation and BAVC; Deirdre Boyle authored the report and Mary Esbjornson served as Executive Director and Project Director of the Video Preservation Initiative.

    Symposium on Video Preservation is hosted by the Museum of Modern Art and organized by Media Alliance, under the leadership of Mary Esbjornson, and by the New York State Council on the Arts.

  • Bob Harris People

    Bob Harris holds a BA from Colgate University and an MFA from the University of California, San Diego; he served as Artistic Director of the NY State Education Department's Summer School of the Media Arts and taught at Ithaca College, UCSD, and Palomar College. He helped found the Video Department at Anthology Film Archives, was Video Curator at Anthology and PS #1 in Queens, NY from 1979 to 1986, and founded at Anthology the first video preservation project in the nation; as a film and video maker his work, including COYOTE, has won festival awards and been shown at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea in Rome, Exit Art, Anthology Film Archives, and Palais de Beux Arts in Brussels.
