Simin Farkondeh

Simin Farkhondeh is an award winning independent producer, educator and activist living in New York. She was born in Germany and raised in Iran. She left Iran in 1980 after the Islamic Revolution to study Fine Arts at the University of Hartford, where she received her Bachelor's Degree.

In 1991 she co-produced, co-directed the Gulf Crisis TV Project, a ten part series that aired on 35 PBS nationwide, on Channel Four in England as well as on over 500 cable stations. The series was also screened at the 1993 Whitney Biennial, at the 1997 Margaret Mead Film Fest, and was given the Global Africa Award. From 1994 to 2003 she was director of Labor at the Crossroads (LABOR X), a monthly TV program about work issues, which aired on cable, channel 75 in New York City and in other cities across the US. Simin is a recipient of the Rockefeller Fellowship Award for Who Gives Kisses Freely From Her Lips, a film about temporary marriage in Iran. Recently she received her MFA in the Media Arts.

    Persheng Sadegh-Vaziri is an award-winning independent filmmaker born and raised in Tehran, Iran; she received a BA from Trinity College (Hartford, Ct.) and an MFA in Cinema Studies from New York University. She worked as a producer for Deep Dish TV on a series about the war in Iraq, for Trinity TV on documentaries about 9/11, and for Internews Network on programs promoting dialogue between societies in conflict; she also worked on the PBS series POV, taught film in Boston and New York, and curated a documentary film fest in Tehran. Her documentaries Journal from Tehran (1987), Far From Iran (1990), A Place Called Home (1998) and Women Like Us (2002) have been broadcast on PBS and are distributed by Women Make Movies.

  • Dallas Brennan People

    Dallas Brennan Rexer joined Big Mouth Productions in 1998 and produced the documentary Deadline with Katy Chevigny, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and broadcast on NBC in 2004. She is producing the verité films Arctic Waltz and Election Day and previously co-produced Outside Looking In: Transracial Adoption in America (ITVS) and Journey to the West: Chinese Medicine Today (Wellspring Media); she also worked on the public television documentaries OUR HOUSE and An American Love Story and served as researcher and consultant for Philadelphia cultural institutions. Rexer was a 1997/98 Fulbright Scholar in Trinidad, West Indies; her reviews have appeared in American Anthropologist and the International Institute for the Visual Arts Web site; she is a graduate of Swarthmore College's Philosophy Department.

  • Nonfiction Powwow in Poughkeepsie: The Flaherty Seminar at Fifty Bibliography

    Report on the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar at Vassar College marking its 50th year; founded in 1955 by Frances Flaherty, the week-long program convened filmmakers, museum programmers, writers, students, and distributors for screenings, public and small-group discussions, and retrospectives. Programmer Susan Oxtoby (Cinematheque Ontario) juxtaposed documentary and experimental work and presented films including Brault and Perrault's Pour la Suite du Monde (1963), Ulrike Ottinger's Taiga (1992), Bruce Conner's Crossroads (1976), Marlon Riggs's Tongues Untied (1989), and Juan Manuel Echavarria's Bocas de Ceniza (2004). Panels debated media circulation strategies from a national Arte-style TV network to straight-to-DVD and internet distribution, and screenings provoked discussions of verite ethics, representation, and archival/experimental practice.

  • Carolyn Tennant People

    Carolyn Tennant holds an MFA from SUNY at Buffalo and a BA (1997) from Hampshire College; additional studies include Squeaky Wheel (2003), Visual Studies Workshop (2002), Mount Holyoke (1993–95), Cornell (1993–94) and the Salt Center for Documentary Field Studies (1994). Since 6/2002 she has been affiliated with the Experimental Television Center (Newark Valley, NY) and from 1/2002 served as Research Assistant for Dr. Zimmermann at Ithaca College, performing copy editing and administrative work. Her Chicago employment included office-manager and receptionist roles; her productions include Fenceline, The Last Hand Loader, Rulloff's Brain, Mazamorreo (recipient of a $10,000 Ill. Humanities Council grant), and the multi-media You Don't Feed Me.

  • Jody Lafond People

    Jody Lafond is a video artist and independent producer whose internationally exhibited experimental videos and activist documentaries have shown at Art in General, the New York Video Festival and the Images Video Festival; she received a NYSCA Media Grant (2001) and NYFA Video Fellowships (1988, 1992). She has produced documentaries and community media since 1989 with groups including 8 mm News Collective and Media Coalition for Reproductive Rights, taught filmmaking at University of Oklahoma (Visiting Assistant Professor, 1987–1988) and University at Buffalo (Teaching Assistant, 1984–1986), and held a Visual Studies Workshop ARE residency (1996) and Experimental Television Center finishing funds (1992, 1995, 1997).

  • Michelle Coe People

    Michelle worked nearly 10 years in independent film and theatre in production, distribution and artist support; she worked in Marketing at First Run/Icarus Films and served as Program Director of the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF). She served on screening committees including the P.O.V. series for PBS, presented at Sundance and South By Southwest, and held production roles on independent film and theatre projects. Originally from Minneapolis, she was Membership/Education Director at Independent Feature Project/Minneapolis-St. Paul, administered the McKnight Fellowship for Screenwriters, and administers WMM's Production Assistance Program overseeing Fiscal Sponsorship filmmakers and related programs.
