• Juan Downey People

  Juan Downey (1940–1993) was a Chilean-born pioneer video artist who studied architecture at the Catholic University of Chile, attended S.W. Hayter's Atelier 17 in Paris, and immigrated to New York in 1965. He produced videotapes, installations, drawings, paintings and performances exploring political discourse, art history and identity; his work was exhibited at institutions including the Whitney, MoMA, Documenta 6 and the Venice Biennale. In 1998 Institut Valencia d'Art Modern mounted a major retrospective; he received support from the Rockefeller and Guggenheim foundations and his work was broadcast on WNET, WGBH and KQED and is available through Electronic Arts Intermix.

  Video on the Air (Department of Video, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; 1986) is a series of visiting artists, producers and curators held in conjunction with the Graduate Video Seminar taught by Beth Berolzheimer. Participants included Lois Bianchi (WNET); Rii Kanzaki (video artist; electronic image processing); Doug Hall (video artist; recent work Storm and Stress links the spectacle of nature with that of technology); Kathy Huffman (curator/producer, CAT Fund, Boston); and Juan Downey (whose videotape series The Thinking Eye investigates Western Art History and culture through autobiography and montage).

  Jaime Davidovich studied at the School of Visual Arts, New York (1963), the University of Uruguay (1959–1961) and the National College, Buenos Aires (1954–1958); his solo exhibitions included Diane Brown Gallery (1987) and Exit Art (1991, Forces), and The Live Show was presented on Manhattan Cable TV (1982) and retrospectively at the American Museum of the moving Image (1989–90), with a group showing at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1976). His awards include NEA Visual Arts Fellowships (1990-84 and 1978), CAPS grants (1982 and 1975) and NYSCA grants (1982 and 1975); his work is held by the Dayton Art Institute, Museum of Modern Art Buenos Aires, the Everson Museum of Art, the H. Abrams Collection and the Akron Art Institute.
