• Michael Scroggins People

  Michael Scroggins is a videographic and computer animator who has worked in real-time videographic animation since 1970 and in non-real-time 3D computer animation since 1983; he became active in immersive VR in 1992 after receiving a Banff Centre for the Arts grant and premiered the VR installation Topological Slide at the Fourth International Conference on Cyberspace in 1993. He holds an MFA from CalArts and has been on the CalArts faculty since 1978; he studied under Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe and collaborated on the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer. His absolute animation works have been screened internationally at institutions including the Centre George Pompidou, the Union of Filmmakers in Moscow, Seibu Ginza in Tokyo, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

• C-Men People

  Julian van Aalderen (1976) and Sjors Trimbach (1974) graduated from the Academy of Arts and Industry in Enschede at the Media-art department and work as animator/illustrator/graphic-designers and video artists; since 1999 they have performed as the C-men veejays. They re-invented a 16-bit style and are described here as contributing to a retro-80'-videogame-hype; they played in London concurrent with the Game on exhibit. All their work is homemade and played on two Amiga 1200 computers and they alter low-res animations live with the MNU2/3 VJ-tool.

• Steve Reinke People

  Steve Reinke was born in 1963 and received an MFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1993; his work has been screened at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1996), the Art Gallery of Ontario (1996) and at many international venues. He has curated The George Kuchar Experience and XYZ/Pleasure Dome and co-edited By the Skin of the Tongue: Artist Video Scripts; he has received support from the Canada Council and the Toronto Arts Council. His work is distributed by V Tape and Videographe.

• Lillian Schwartz People

  Lillian Schwartz was resident artist and consultant at Bell Laboratories (New Jersey) from 1969 to 2002; in the 1970s and 1980s she developed computer-based techniques for artists and made abstract animations combining film, computers and music with collaborators including Kenneth Knowlton. Her films were shown and awarded at Venice Biennale, Zagreb and Cannes and by The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences; they received Emmy nominations and awards and are held by institutions including The Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lumen and curator Gregory Kurcewicz assembled a touring package that includes restored animations and the 1976 documentary The Artist and the Computer, produced by Larry Keating for AT&T.

• An Interview with Peer Bode Interview

  Peer Bode began producing video around 1971 with an early black-and-white portapak while an undergraduate at SUNY Binghamton; he worked with filmmakers Larry Gottheim and Ken Jacobs and used the Experimental TV Center's keyers, mixers and colorizers. Remaining in Binghamton through the mid-1970s, he collaborated with the American Dance Asylum and with engineers and artists Ralph Hocking, Nam June Paik, Shuya Abe, David Jones and Walter Wright on tools such as the Paik-Abe Colorizer/Synthesizer, SEGs, Scan-A-Mate, a Spatial and Intensity Digitizer and an Elf II computer.

• Jeffrey Lerer People

  Jeffrey Lerer is a visual artist who spent most of the 1970s exhibiting in Mexico and returned to New York in 1981 to pursue time-based media and 3D computer animation before concentrating on drawing and sculpture for the Gilbert Hotel Project. He taught computer animation at Pratt by 1992 and at the School of Visual Arts from 1998; his animation work received funding from Experimental Television Center, Fund for Innovative TV, New York Foundation for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts and T.J. Watson Research Center.
