Sanjna Singh and Pia Sawhney

Born in Mumbai, Sanjna left at 17 for the US to pursue a career in film. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 2000 and has worked during and after college in the film industry in Philadelphia. She has worked for the past three years at HBO Studios.

She founded Chai Break Films in 2003 with fellow Bryn Mawr graduate Pia Sawhney. Their short film premiered at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam, and in the US at the Amnesty International Film Festival. They were awarded a NYSCA grant and were nominated by NAATA for ABC's Talent Development scholarship.

Sanjna has studied at Bryn Mawr and ICP in New York and at Paris VII (Jussieu) and the Spéos Institute in Paris. She is enrolled in IFP's Project Involve Documentary Unit. "Out of Status" was supported by the Finishing Funds Program of the Experimental Television Center, and is distributed by MediaRights.org.

    Pia Sawhney graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1999 with an undergraduate degree in sociology and a minor in economics; she worked as an Analyst at JP Morgan & Co for two years and resigned in February 2001 to pursue writing, theatre and filmmaking.     Shu Lea Cheang is a media installation artist and filmmaker whose work activates cross-cultural collaboration; notable installations include COLOR SCHEMES (1990, Whitney Museum) and The AIRWAVES PROJECT (1991, Capp Street Project), and Those Fluttering Objects of Desire (1992, Exit Art; 1993 Whitney Biennial). Her feature film FRESH KILL (80 minutes, 35mm) premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival (1994) and was included in the Whitney Biennial (1995); other major projects include Bowling Alley (1995, Walker Art Center) and BRANDON (1998–99, Guggenheim commission). She holds an M.A. in Cinema Studies from New York University (1979) and a B.A. from National Taiwan University (1976); grants include The Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

  • Michelle Coe People

    Michelle worked nearly 10 years in independent film and theatre in production, distribution and artist support; she worked in Marketing at First Run/Icarus Films and served as Program Director of the Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers (AIVF). She served on screening committees including the P.O.V. series for PBS, presented at Sundance and South By Southwest, and held production roles on independent film and theatre projects. Originally from Minneapolis, she was Membership/Education Director at Independent Feature Project/Minneapolis-St. Paul, administered the McKnight Fellowship for Screenwriters, and administers WMM's Production Assistance Program overseeing Fiscal Sponsorship filmmakers and related programs.

  • Kristin Lucas People

    Kristin Lucas is a Brooklyn-based artist working with video/installation, performance and the world wide web; her work addresses automation and the psychological effects of rapid spread technology. Born 1968 in Davenport, Iowa, she holds a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union (1994) and has exhibited internationally since 1996 at venues including The New Museum, Postmasters, ICA Philadelphia, ZKM and the Guggenhiem and at festivals such as ISEA and VIPER. She has received grants and awards including the Colbert Foundation Award (2002, 2001), Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant (1998) and Andrea Frank Foundation Grant (1999); she held residencies at P.S.1 National Studio Program and The Experimental Television Center and has video distribution through Electronic Arts Intermix and VTape.

  • Sarah Friedland People

    New York based filmmaker Sarah Friedland received a BA in film and sociology from Sarah Lawrence College in 2003; she attended the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, and has worked with filmmakers in New York and abroad on socially minded and creative films. Editorial credits include Principal Editor on Free to Fly: the US— Cuba Link, a documentary by the award-winning director Estela Bravo; La Memoria es Vaga by Katie Halper; Las diarias porcelanas by La Vaughn Belle; she was Assistant Editor on The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo by Amy Stechler.
