1972 TV/Media Program Chronology

New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), New York City, formed a TV/Media Program; the council's total appropriation was 16.3 million. Two Texts Concerning Portable Video Tools

Two short texts by Sherry Miller Hocking document the emergence of portable video and a chronology of portable videotape recorders; Early Portable Video (April 1992) describes Sony's mid-1960s 1/2" CV systems and portapak technology including a black-and-white camera, separate battery-operated 1/2" recorder, ten-pin cable, external microphone, 20-minute tape capacity and helical-scan recording, and notes artist and activist use and foundation support from the Rockefeller Foundation and the New York State Council on the Arts. The chronology (1999) lists 1965–1969 product introductions (Sony CV-2000, CV-2400, CV-2100/2200), EIAJ 1/2" standards in 1969, and Nam June Paik's early use in New York; appended material illustrates the CV portapak and product brochures.

Tyler Gooden People

Tyler Gooden received a BFA from The Atlanta College of Art and Design and studied at the Experimental Television Center and in Cortona, Italy. He exhibited with Dos Pestaneos and produced a sound installation from recordings of forty-five languages before settling in Prague as an artist in residency at Jeleni Studios. He worked in visual effects as Visual Effects Assistant on Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm (due August 2005), declined an animation-assistant offer from Jan Svankmajer to pursue directing and currently directs clips and commercials; his clips have aired in the Czech Republic and Germany.

1986 U.S. National Science Foundation Chronology

The U.S. National Science Foundation initiated NSFNET, an Internet backbone with 45 megabit per second facilities carrying 12 billion packets monthly. NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy contributed NSINET and ESNET; in Europe backbones such as NORDUNET connect over one hundred thousand computers and commercial providers are beginning to offer backbone and access services. Regional support is provided by consortia and local institutions; support has come from federal and state governments, industry and cooperative international research organizations; since 1989 the Internet has emphasized multiprotocol interworking and OSI integration.

UBER ORGAN ( body of life ) Bibliography

Peer Bode's UBER ORGAN (body of life) is a 30-minute video (2003) assembling interviews, archival sound and notebook material documenting Harald Bode (1909–1986) and his electronic instruments. Sources include a 1948 Melodium recording for North German Radio (Hamburg), 1972 b+w 1/2" portapack interviews by Ralf D. Bode and Lenore Bode, and digitized excerpts of Harald Bode's notebooks (1937–1977) processed at the Experimental Television Center (Owego, NY); nonlinear editing/performance occurred in 2002 at the Institute for Electronic Arts (Alfred, NY) and PEP Studios (Rochester, NY). The work employs a hand-built digital video frame buffer (FB-1) designed by David Jones and features collaborators including David Jones, Andrew Deutsch, Steina Vasulka, Pauline Oliveros and Ralph Hocking; the E.T.C. and I.E.A. receive partial support from the New York State Council on the Arts.

Unn Fahlstrøm studied at Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Oslo (2000–2004) and earned a Bachelor in Art History at University of Stockholm (1996–2000); she also attended John Cabot University in Rome, University of Oslo and M¯lla Art School, Moss (1994–1996). Solo exhibitions include Aesthetics of separation at Kunstverket Gallery, Oslo (2006); Gallery Brandstrup, Oslo and Hundre runder at HÂ Gamle PrestegÂrd and Circulationscentralen, Malmö (2007); and HKS, Bergen (2008).
