Up in the Air, An Interview with Brian Springer Interview

Brian Springer, a founding member of Squeaky Wheel who recently returned to Buffalo after three years on the West Coast, served as Hallwalls Video Artist-in-Residence and mounted Viewing Baby From the Blimp, a living-room installation incorporating behind-the-scenes satellite broadcasts, wireless telephone transmissions and intercom interceptions with a portable satellite dish. He also produced Home Video Theater, a Public Access television series airing on three Western New York cable networks to showcase local home video; in the interview he discusses his interest in surveillance technologies, a reenacted car-telephone whistleblower conversation, camcorder proliferation since 1985, and New York State public-access rules requiring locally originated, non-profit programming.

Ursula Endlicher People

Ursula Endlicher is an artist whose work intersects the Internet, performance and multi-media installation; since the mid-1990s she has used HTML to choreograph performances, visualize code in installations and translate it into sound. Her work has been shown internationally at venues in Z¸rich, Vienna, Istanbul, Pittsburgh and New York; she received commissions from Turbulence.org/New Radio, Performing Arts, Inc. and the Whitney Museum for its artport website. Her work appears in Rhizome's Art Base and in ursula blicke videoarchiv; she was born in Vienna and lives in New York.

Valerie Pavia People

Valerie Pavia trained in Performance Art at Bordeaux (1992) and holds a Masters in Law from Montpellier (1991); her work was selected at international film festivals including Cannes (2000, En Avant). She received multiple awards, including First Prize at Vidéoformes Clermont-Ferrand (2000) and Split Film Festival, Croatia (1999), the Jury Award at the Biennale de l'Image en Mouvement, Geneva (2003) and awards at Gentilly, Retina (Hungary) and Novossibirsk (all 2003). In 2001 she received a grant from Afaa and Mairie of Paris to make the film Le Rêve de l'Ours (Dream of the Bear) in Moscow; her work is also associated with the International Media Art Festival, Berlin (2006).

Valerie Soe People

Valerie Soe is a writer and experimental videomaker in San Francisco; her productions include Mixed Blood, Picturing Oriental Girls A (Re) Educational Videotape and All Orientals Look the Same, and her video Beyond Asiaphilia premiered in May 1997 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. Her awards include a James D. Phelan Art Award in Video, a 1994 Cultural Equity Grant from the San Francisco Art Commission and a 1992 Rockefeller Foundation Intercultural Film/Video Fellowship. She has published in Afterimage and High Performance and teaches in San Francisco State University's Asian American Studies Department.

Van Dousmanis People

Evangelos Dousmanis recounts early training in darkroom mechanics from his grandfather and visual/social instruction from his mother, and studied under Cinema Chair Ralph Hocking at Binghamton University; he emphasizes photography as a communicative and semiotic tool. After 20 years as a photojournalist he documented the campus and its students with camera, noting the shift from chemical darkroom processes to digital imaging and asserting a responsibility to the viewer. The work appears in the book and exhibition Beyond the Lens at Binghamton University, 2004, and includes acknowledgements to numerous university staff.

Van McElwee People

Van McElwee is a video artist whose work transforms electronic fragments into explorations of sound, motion and time. Reconstructions: The Video Image Outside of Time comprises a single-channel tape and 27 Cibachrome photographs made from computer files; the tape links interiors shot in the United States, Europe and India into nonstop motion while the photographs present stopped electronic images; McElwee has produced experimental video since 1976, received numerous grants and awards including The American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, and is professor of media at Webster University in Saint Louis.

1978 Vancouver Art Gallery Chronology

Montreal Tapes: Video as a Community or Political Tool was presented at The Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker; the program comprises interviews and statements on community and political video practice. Contributors listed include Challenge for Change, Parallel Video Institute, Intercom Satellite Project, La Femme et Le Film, Videotron and Groupe d'Intervention Video; the record also notes statements on videotapes exhibited in Quebec '75 organized by Normand Theriault.

Vanessa Lauria People

Vanessa Lauria is an artist from upstate New York who grew up in Buffalo, attended Syracuse University and lives in Rochester; she majored in illustration. She experimented with fibers as a medium, drawing with a needle and sewing machine and painting with fabric patterns and textures, and after exposure to avant-garde cinema by Maya Deren and Jan Svankmajer she produced several animation projects. She uses rotoscoping to alter video frames by hand and works in cross-stitch, embroidery and appliqué; she received a Finishing Funds 2006 award from the Experimental Television Center.
