James N. Kienitz Wilkins (b. 1983) is a film and video maker living in Brooklyn. He is a graduate of the Cooper Union School of Art, located in New York City, and he has screened his short films in various "underground" film festivals. He was raised in Maine-the state of first light. (www.jnkw.com)

    Richard Herskowitz has been Artistic Director of the Virginia Film Festival since 1994; previously he directed the Cornell Cinema for twelve years, programming nearly 500 films and special programs annually. He served as adjunct curator at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art; authored film commentary; programmed the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar in 1987, 1991 (Riga, Latvia) and 1999; he received an M.A. in film studies from the University of Wisconsin in 1978 and has taught film courses at U.Va., Cornell and Rutgers.

    The New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) funded production and exhibition spaces for film and video installations, increasing state support in the early 1970s and moving media art from alternative venues into museums. Institutions cited include the Everson Museum (early 1970s video curator), the Whitney (video exhibitions from 1971, Re/Visions 1979, Nam June Paik retrospective 1982) and MoMA (Projects 1971, video department 1974); artists and technologies ranged from 1960s avant-garde closed-circuit and multi-monitor work to later interactive and multicultural installations such as The Erl King (1986) and Color Schemes (1990).

  • Bill Creston People

    Bill Creston (born 6 March 1932) was initially a painter who pioneered inexpensive video filmmaking, initiated programs at Cooper Union and The School of Visual Arts, and produced CV/AV black-and-white videotapes and a video journal. He shifted to Super-8 sound color film in 1976, operated the only full-service Super-8 studio in New York City through the 1990s, and had nine films shown at The Museum of Modern Art and twelve at Anthology Film Archives. In 1969 he installed the Construction Site project on 6th Avenue between 22nd and 23rd Streets; he co-directs eMediaLoft.org and resumed painting in 2001.
