Laura Parnes

Laura Parnes is an artist whose work engages strategies of narrative film and video art to blur the lines between storytelling conventions and experimentation. Parnes combines elements such as continuity and dialogue with highly stylized sets and performances to present non-linear narratives as installations that utilize the architectural space of a gallery or museum. By deploying cinematic citation as an element of site-specific installation, the staging of her own productions reverberates in an exhibition setting, often requiring the audience to physically enter a scripted environment or re-creation of the production set. Installations operate at a symbolic and sculptural level, while maintaining a narrative coherence that points to a future in which reality is tightly nested in layers of art, popular culture, and experience.

She has screened and exhibited her work widely in the US and internationally, including the Kunsthalle Winterthur, Winterthur, Switzerland; Light Industry, Brooklyn, NY; Pacific Film Archives, Berkeley Art Museum, Berkeley, CA; Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain; the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Dunedin Public Art Gallery, New Zealand; the Institute for Contemporary Art /P.S. 1 Museum, NY; Museo de Arte Contempor·neo Galizia, Spain; Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami; Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Kunsthalle Winterthur, Winterthur, Switzerland; the Brooklyn Museum, NY; and on PBS and Spanish Television. Her work has been featured in solo shows at Alma Enterprises, London; Locust Projects, Miami; Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, LA; Upstream Gallery, Amsterdam; Participant Inc., NY; Deitch Projects, NY; and in a two-person screening at The Museum of Modern Art, NY. She has been awarded residencies at the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Programs at the Montalvo Arts Center, the Wexner Center, Harvestworks, and others.

She has received a Finishing Funds grant from the Experimental Television Center and from the New York State Council on the Arts. She has taught at New York University, The New School, Bennington College and is currently a Visiting Artist at Cooper Union. She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art in 1990.

  • L. Halsey Brown People

    L. Halsey Brown is an NYC-based artist working in the digital realm; her site-responsive and video works have been shown at alternative venues, galleries and museums internationally. One ongoing project, Places We Are, is a series of site-specific video projects in everyday spaces that use video to explore the psychological implications of social spaces such as bars and tour buses. She is also a video curator; her most recent project, media(tion); fragmentation and acceleration, will be on view at The Center of Photography at Woodstock in November, 2000, and she has taught at Film/Video Arts and received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts.

  • Courtney Rile People

    Courtney Rile is an artist, curator and arts coordinator based in Syracuse, NY; her video art has been shown internationally and locally, including the first Syracuse International Film and Video Festival. In 2005 she curated the moving-images program Videohm at an upscale lounge and bar in Syracuse, presenting nearly 300 hours of international experimental film and video and VJ work; she also coordinated the exhibition Clement Greenberg In Syracuse: Then & Now at ThINC's Company Gallery that year. She is Gallery Coordinator at Delavan Art Gallery and holds an A.A. in TV/Radio/Film from Montgomery County Community College, PA, and a B.F.A. in Video Art from Syracuse University, NY.

  • Mariam Ghani People

    Mariam Ghani is a Brooklyn-based artist working in video, installation and new and tactical media; her work maps contrapuntal narratives in border zones between cultures. Her projects include net art commissions for Turbulence.org and artwurl, screenings and installations at international festivals and institutions including Eyebeam Atelier, texts in Sarai Reader 05 and the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, a BA from NYU (2000) and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts (2002), residencies at LMCC and Eyebeam Atelier, and a 2007 Finishing Funds award from the Experimental Television Center.
