Prema Murthy

Prema Murthy's work examines the shifting boundaries of a gendered and socially constructed body by remapping its surface through various forms of new technologies. She explores new forms of gender embodiment through performance and net-based installation, digital prints and sound. Her work has been shown at several venues including The Clocktower Gallery-NY, The Gertrude Stein Repertory Theater-NY, Sandra Gering Gallery-NY, MIT-Cambridge, MA, The Alternative Museum-NY, The University of Iowa-IA, and The Bianca Pilat Gallery-Milan, IT.

Prema has also collaborated with digital art groups Floating Point Unit, The Electronic Disturbance Theater, and Fakeshop. She has been awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Computer Arts and is currently an artist-in-residence at Harvestworks Digital Media Arts Center in New York. In the Fall 1999, she will be presenting with Fakeshop the performance/installation, multiple_dwelling at The Ars Electronica Festival.

    Mary Magsamen received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art; she has exhibited at Anna Kustera Gallery and White Columns in New York City. Since her exhibition at Momenta she has screened videos and exhibited sculptures at venues including PS122, Art in General and The Knitting Factory in New York City.

  • Cynthia Lovett People

    Cynthia Lovett received an MPS from the Tisch School of the Arts - Interactive Telecommunications Program at New York University (2001) and an MFA from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia (1996); she participated in residencies including the PS1 International Studio Program and the Harvestworks New Works Residency (1998). She has exhibited video and installation works at The Sculpture Center, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Momenta Art (Brooklyn), and the Galleries at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia; she was a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Swing Space Artist and an artist in residence at the Rotunda Gallery/BCAT Multimedia Residency (2005-06) and the Experimental Television Center (2006).     Michele Thursz is an independent curator and director of Post Media Network; in 1999 she co-founded and directed Moving Image Gallery, NYC. Recent projects include a collaboration in a production with the electronic orphanage and artist Miltos Manetas and a guest curator role at the New Museum's Media Z Lounge organizing Cin-o-matic- Memory and the Cinematic Perception, which examined the impact of new technologies on the cinematic experience. She is organizing a group show entitled In Medias Res: Technology's Impact on Artistic Practice at Exit Art, NYC; she has consulted for http://www.Turbulence.org, a net art initiative, and for bitforms gallery, NYC, on marketing and distribution of software related art.

  • Mary Magsamen and Stephen Hillerbrand People

    Mary Magsamen and Stephan Hillerbrand are multi-media artists, curators and new media activists who have collaborated for five years and been exhibited nationally and internationally. Hillerbrand has received National Endowment for the Arts and Art Matters grants; Magsamen has received the Longwood Cyber Residency; both hold Masters degrees from Cranbrook Academy of Art and were awarded the 2003 Lower Manhattan Cultural Centers Artist-in-Residence Workspace Program at the Woolworth Building for their collaborative project Das Angstbauen. Their artist statement cites fantasy, role-playing and self-portraiture and a stream-of-consciousness method using digital image acquisition and manipulation to create video work.

    Ralph Hocking offers an artist statement for a computer-based installation slated for fall 1999; his listed installation works are Jump, diggit and Running, and he links the project to prior study in pottery. The work uses four to nine monitors, each driven by its own Amiga with one video and two audio outputs and a serial link to a master referee computer; the Amiga provides four oscillators and image and sound sampling, and imagery is altered by digital processing techniques including convolving, bit swapping and field manipulation, producing three-dimensional illusions. The project is part of Motion: The 58th Exhibition of Central New York Artists at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute, October 2, 1999 to January 2, 2000, curated by John Knecht.
