Paik/Abe Colorizer - Experimental Television Center Studio System Manual Tools
The Paik/Abe Colorizer is a manual video mixer combining up to seven video signals into the three inputs of a color encoder and routing the output through an amplifier; channel controls include gain pots, on/off switches, color selectors and pan pots. Selector positions include Red, Green, Blue, R-G, R-B and G-B; the unit performs additive mixing, is sensitive to input gain (producing key-like or negative effects), has no built-in voltage control inputs (external video VCAs and voltage-controlled processors can be used). Panasonic NV-8100 Series Tools
Panasonic NV-8100 series comprises three black-and-white, fully transistorized ᄑ" decks—NV-8100, NV-8100D and NV-8100AD—each using two rotary video heads and not color adaptable; the NV-8100AD adds electronic editing, remote control, optional auto-rewind and automatic gain control. Introduced about 1968, the machines run at 12 IPS for approximately 40 minutes on a 7-inch (2400 ft) reel, include push-button head cleaning, one audio channel with dubbing capability and interchangeable tapes across the series; the NV-8100D was priced at about $1,050 in 1968. Pantograph Tools
Tom DeWitt's Pantomation (illustrated by Vibeke Sorensen) describes the Electronic Pantograph, a television-camera-and-computer system that tracks keyed points and records position-versus-time; by December 1976 the authors had developed a machine that could load hand-drawn waveforms and produced a pantomation videotape (Dec 31, 1976) used in the pantomime Outta Space. Phil Edelstein documents the Key Positioner hardware—two 8-bit counters, latches and strobe logic—implemented for a PDP‑8/L and requiring H/V drive, a 3.58 MHz chroma signal and DACs. Projects involved Electronic Body Arts, the Air Farce Mime Troupe, the Electronic Music Studio at SUNYA and WMHT TV; funding included a New York State Council on the Arts grant and a NEA conference demonstration on March 10 in Buffalo, NY.

Thomas Tadlock, a Rhode Island School of Design alumnus who worked with light sculptures and was influenced by Nam June Paik, designed The Archetron as a commissioned device. The unit accepts a black-and-white broadcast television signal, removes a triangular pie-shaped section and repeats it around a symmetrical axis to produce kaleidoscopic images; at least three units comprised the machine and each incoming signal had three knobs (red, green, blue) with additional control over percent of color generated by a mathematical relationship of the B&W levels. The device is operated in real time from a console of knobs, switches, three small TV monitors, mirrors and color filters and can combine all or part of three live broadcasts for distribution via broadcast, closed-circuit or cable companies.

Raster Manipulation Unit: Operation and Construction (1980) documents a prepared-television modification that adds extra yokes to a conventional black-and-white CRT and drives them with audio or function generators; the technique permits raster reversal, raster collapse to a line or point, S-curve distortions and other deformations, and uses optical rescanning to record the effects. System configuration lists a modified receiver/monitor with raster reversal and collapse functions, one stereo and one mono amplifier and three audio generators; added yokes include a color yoke and a continuous-wind (S-curve) yoke. Signal examples include sine, square and triangle waveforms, Lissajous patterns and frequency guidelines; Nam June Paik is cited as having popularized the modifications.
RCA SelectaVision VCR Tools
Sony introduced the first Betamax video cassette recorder in the US in 1976; the system was marketed to encourage consumers to record television programs off the air, and Sony was sued by Disney and Universal, with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1984 that home taping fell under the fair use exception. In October 1977 RCA introduced its SelectaVision Video Cassette system, produced by Matsushita and based on VHS; it was incompatible with Betamax and offered two-hour and four-hour recording modes while Betamax offered one hour. RCA marketed SelectaVision with prerecorded sports programming and a large promotion campaign; by 1979 VHS outsold Betamax by 2 to 1.
Rutt/Etra Video Synthesizer Systems Brochure Tools
Brochure for RUTT/ETRA Video Synthesizer Systems, manufactured by Rutt Electrophysics and distributed by MPCS in New York City; lists models RE-4 ($8,500, later $12,999) and RE-4-B ($16,300, later $24,999) and describes display and scan features including Type A 525-line and Type B 1050-line displays for full NTSC rescanned images suitable for two-inch hi-band videotape or direct telecast. It lists Animation Control Modules (summing amplifier, diode module, ramp generator, audio interface, two waveform generators), notes audio/biofeedback and computer control, mentions optional accessories to remove raster lines and claims savings.
Rutt/Etra: Notes on Development Tools
Steve Rutt and Bill Etra developed the Rutt/Etra scan processor in the early 1970s with support from the New York State Council on the Arts at WNET's TV Lab in 1972–1973; the prototype later saw limited commercial production. The analog DC-coupled modular system modulated monitor deflection signals in real time to retime and reposition raster imagery, comprised three units (monitor/yoke/video amp; control and ramp generators; sweep processing) and was marketed to media artists and broadcast facilities despite high cost and flaws including limited waveform-generator capacity and CRT burn.
SAID (Spatial and Intensity Digitizer) Tools
The Spatial and Intensity Digitizer (SAID) was developed for the Experimental Television Center in Binghamton, New York, arising in 1976 from an effort to create a low-cost, video-speed analog-to-digital converter; the project implemented a 6 bit A/D and a companion 6 bit D/A, supported interactive-compositional and automatic-production modes, and produced posterize and mosaic effects in real time. Donald E. McArthur (b.1938; Ph.D. Theoretical Physics, University of Nebraska, 1967) designed SAID and later co-developed the McArthur/Schier Digital Image Generator with Jeff Schier for the Vasulkas; Walter Wright wrote the first program and Ralph Hocking and Jeff Schier participated in hardware arrangements.
Sanyo VTC 7100 Tools
Sanyo VTC 7100 is an EIAJ black-and-white 1/2" portable video cassette recorder with still-frame capability and a rotary four-head system; cassettes held 30 or 60 minutes in the original format and 120 minutes in V-Cord II format, and the V Cord format was introduced in 1972. Using a battery with the VC 500 camera provided about 45 minutes of recording; the unit is described as a world’s first portable cassette VTR and is light in weight at 15 lbs. The Operating Instructions Manual lists features, controls, power sources, playback, dubbing, maintenance and safety functions.

SONY Betamovie BMC-200 Tools
Sony introduced the Betamovie BMC-200 in 1983 as the first camcorder combining a video camera and VCR; the single-head, half-diameter drum spun twice as fast and recorded only, requiring playback on a Betamax player. Specifications note solid-state circuitry, recording times of 60 minutes continuous with V-32 tape (2,370 ft.) and 30 minutes with V-31 tape (1,240 ft.), and rewind/fast-forward within seven minutes. SONY CVC 2000 Tools
The CVC-2000 video camera was marketed for use with the early CV 2000 series of video recorders and sold as an accessory for the CV-2000 and CV-2000D; it was also listed for use with the TCV-2010 and 2020.
