Plenary address to the Society for Cinema Studies, Chicago, March 9, 2000; delivered by a film educator with two decades in a four-year undergraduate production program. The speaker maps an expanded field—film schools, communications, arts and medical curricula—and moving-image media (film, video, CD-ROM, web, installations), and diagnoses threats from corporatization, distance learning and declining nonprofit exhibition. Citing exchanges with NAMAC, Women Make Movies and the Robert Flaherty Seminar and referencing 1989 political events and global violences, they call for alliances with media-arts centers and offer ten programmatic wishes including anti-racist feminist politics, tenure lines and larger rental and programming budgets.

Dean Snell People

Dean Snell has a background in both technical and artistic areas; he holds an undergraduate degree in Music Composition with a strong emphasis on electronic music. He maintains a home Midi, Audio studio incorporating both older analogue and newer equipment; before ITP he worked as a graphic designer and as a sound designer for theatre. Debora Berrnagozzi exhibited videos, prints, sculpture, photos and performances between 1997 and 2005 at venues including Cone Gallery (Phoenix), Studio LoDo (Phoenix), The Haunt (Ithaca), Squeaky Wheel (Buffalo), SHULZ (Koln), Moonbow Festival (Stockholm), Artsite (Wellsville), Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester) and the High Museum of Art (Atlanta); works include single-channel video, video installations and giclée prints, and she served as artistic director for Bound II. She presented an MFA Thesis Exhibition at Artsite and holds an M.F.A. in Electronic Integrated Arts (Alfred University, 2002) and a B.F.A. in Video Art (Atlanta College of Art, 1999); she studied English at Emory University (1989–1991).

In January 2008 she collaborated with Truckstop Media's Braden King and musician Shahzad Ismaily on an installation and performance at Sundance's New Frontiers, and in August 2008 she attended the Digital Media Residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts where she worked and performed with German audio artist Carsten Nicolai. Deborah Poe worked as an environmental activist in Austin; as a hostel clerk and bartender in Paris; as a waitress in Taos; and as an editor and international program manager in Seattle, and as an educator in Washington state and New York. She is preparing the poetry collection Our Parenthetical Ontology and a forthcoming book, Elements; her poems were nominated for Pushcart Prizes the last two years and have appeared in Drunken Boat and in the anthology Fingernails Across the Chalkboard: Poetry and Prose on HIV/AIDS From the Black Diaspora.

Her work has been exhibited at Temporary Services Gallery (Chicago), Para/Site Gallery (Hong Kong), the Latvian Museum of Foreign Art (Riga) and Smioagalleri (Reykjavik), and screened at San Francisco Cinematheque, Rotterdam, Sundance, Viennale 2002, L'Alternativa (Barcelona) and CinemaTexas. Awards and support include the Center For Land Use Interpretation (Wendover, UT), Wexner Center for the Arts (OH), Danish Film Institute Workshop (Copenhagen), Illinois Arts Council Artist's Fellowships, the Gecko Award (CinemaTexas), THAW Best of Festival and CUFF Best Experimental Film.
