    New York State Media Festival held April 12-13, 1996 at Syracuse University; it was the second festival, following the 1993 Upstate Media Festival. Both festivals were supported by Media Alliance, the Upstate Media Posse and the Art Media Studies Department of Syracuse University. The Upstate Media Posse organized to support planning for the first festival.

  18. 1979 New York Upstate Meeting of Non-Profit Media Groups Chronology

    Meeting of non-profit media groups convened March 9, 1979 at Synapse Video Center in Syracuse to continue discussions about forming an organization eventually known as Media Alliance; attendees included representatives from museums, university media centers, community video projects and public broadcasters, including Everson Museum, Experimental Television Center, Vasulka Corporation, Visual Studies Workshop, WCNY-TV and WXXI-TV. A subsequent meeting in New York City involved John Reilly, Mary MacArthur, Leandra Strobing, Tom Morey, Willoughby Sharp, Davidson Gigliotti, John Sanborn, Michael Rothbard, Kathie Bodily and Liza Bear representing Global Village, The Kitchen and Inter-Media Art Center.

  19. 1971 Newburgh Media Project Chronology

    Newburgh Media Project was a Ford Foundation supported program (69-70) designed for high school kids to use media in the community; it was listed in Radical Software in Spring 1971. Cable access was available but censorship became a problem when kids showed tape over cable from Cambodia demonstrations in Washington, and the project experienced repeated hassles with the school board. Participants sought independent access to equipment through Things, Inc.; contacts listed are Tom Scalzo, Andy Perrota, Louie Stark and Gail Cohen c/o Things, Inc., Foster Town United Methodist Church.

  23. Nicholas Economos People

    Nicholas Economos is an artist and educator in rural Western New York whose practice includes interactive media, sound, video, animation and prints. He is Site Editor for Rhizome.org at The New Museum of Contemporary Art in NYC, edits the Rhizome web site and Rhizome Rare email list, and received an Individual Artist Project Grant from New York State Council on the Arts. He has exhibited at numerous venues, was a frequent artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center in Owego, New York, and is a visiting professor in the Department of Expanded Media at Alfred University.

  24. 1972 Nicholas Ray Chronology

    Nicholas Ray, film director, was at the Cinema Department, Binghamton University (1971–1973) as a visiting film professor. He produced sections of a film originally titled Gun Under My Pillow (later titled We Can't Go Home Again) at the Experimental Television Center with Ralph Hocking, using a Video Synthesizer to break up the film image plane into multiple image sources.

  25. Nicholas Ray People

    Nicholas Ray (born Raymond Nicholas Kienzle Jr.) was an American film director whose key 1949–1956 films included They Live By Night, In a Lonely Place, Johnny Guitar, and Rebel Without a Cause; he worked at RKO (protected by Howard Hughes) and later directed epics including King of Kings and began 55 Days at Peking before a 1963 heart attack curtailed his mainstream career. From 1971–1973 he taught filmmaking at Harpur College (SUNY Binghamton), where he and students produced the autobiographical We Can’t Go Home Again using multiple superimpositions and a synthesizer; an early cut screened at Cannes in 1973. He died of lung cancer on June 16, 1979 in New York City at age 67.
