Yael Bartana People
Yael Bartana, born 1970 in Kfar-Yehozkel, Israel, holds a BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem and an MFA from the New York School of Visual Arts; she participated in the Rijksakademie artist-in-residence program from 2000-2001 and has had solo exhibitions in countries including Germany, Israel, Australia and Japan. She received the Anselm Kiefer Prize (2003) and the Dorothea von Stetten-Kunstpreis (2005). Her work examines the relationship between ritual and identity in Israeli society through documentary footage of public and semi-public collective events, such as shooting drills for trainee female soldiers and the carnivalesque festivities of Purim; she currently lives and works in Amsterdam and Tel Aviv and lists website www.my-i.com.

Yael Kanarek People
Yael Kanarek is a new media artist who has developed the interdisciplinary project World of Awe since 1995; versions 1995, 1997 and 2000 have been added to Rhizome's Artbase and the work was selected for the Whitney Biennial 2002. World of Awe and Kanarek's online and offline work have been presented at festivals in Brazil, France, England, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Israel, Korea and the USA; the World of Awe screen saver is available through Refresh, the art of the screen saver on artmuseum.net. Kanarek is an artist-in-residence at Eyebeam Atelier and Harvestworks and produces The Upgrade!, a monthly gathering of new media artists and curators hosted by Eyebeam.

Yasuaki Nakajima People
Yasuaki Nakajima, born in Hokkaido, Japan, is an independent filmmaker who moved to New York in 1996 to join the independent film community; he previously shot a claymation short on a secondhand Super-8 mm camera while working as a window cleaner and hitchhiked around Australia in 1994 to film a six-month desert experience. His film After the Apocalypse, a black-and-white 16mm futuristic drama, received a Finishing Funds 2001 award from the Experimental TV Center; it screened at the Asian American Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Festival and was an official selection of the Lake Placid Film Festival in 2004; website: http://www.aftertheapocalypse.com
Yasunao Tone People
Yasunao Tone, born Tokyo 1935, is a Japanese composer and Fluxus artist who co-founded Group Ongaku in 1960 and participated in Hi-Red Center, Team Random and other avant-garde groups; he has worked in electronics, computer systems, film, radio, television and environmental art. He moved to the United States in 1972 and composed four scores for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company; his Geography and Music was commissioned by the American Dance Festival and remained in Cunningham's repertory from 1979 to 1986. He received grants from CAPS, the New York State Council on the Arts, the NEA via Just Above Midtown Gallery, and a NYFA Fellowship.

The Yes Men, principally Andy and Mike, conducted satirical impostures and media stunts posing as WTO/GATT officials and corporate representatives; they delivered lectures (including at the International Legal Studies Conference in Salzburg), created GATT.org, and staged events in places such as Salzburg, Tampere, Sydney and Finland. Yury Gitman People
Yury Gitman is a designer, inventor and award-winning artist who exhibited internationally, including in Perth, Paris, Austria and New York. He deployed Magicbikes wireless bicycle hotspots to access the Internet inside the New York subway and won the Ars Electronica Golden Nica for Net Vision in 2003; in 2005 he opened Banana Design Lab. He worked with NYCWireless and local cultural organizations to promote open Internet policy; he taught in the Design Technology MFA program at Parsons and holds degrees from New York University's Interactive Telecommunication Program and Georgia Tech; his work has been featured in BBC, New York Times, Newsweek and NPR.

Yvonne Buchanan is a multi-disciplinary artist working in illustration, drawing, video and film; she manipulates video footage to alter the familiar and addresses gender, race and spirituality. Her videos and films have screened nationally at Anthology Film Archives, Slamdance Film Festival, Roxbury Film Festival, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Everson Museum of Art; her political illustrations have appeared in The New York Times and the Washington Post and her children's book illustrations have been published by Simon and Schuster and Scholastic. She was born in New York City and teaches illustration and narrative drawing at Syracuse University, residing in Syracuse, New York.
Yvonne Rainer People
Yvonne Rainer, born San Francisco 1934, trained in New York from 1957 and began choreographing in 1960; she co-founded the Judson Dance Theater in 1962. Notable dances include Terrain (1963), The Mind is a Muscle (1968), Continuous Project-Altered Daily (1969–70) and This is the story of a woman who... (1973), and After Many a Summer Dies the Swan (2000, Baryshnikov commission). Since 1972 she has completed seven feature films addressing social and aesthetic issues; Privilege (1990) and MURDER and murder (1996) won festival awards. Her book A Woman Who... was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 1999; she received two Guggenheim Fellowships and a MacArthur Fellowship and had a 2002 exhibition at the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery in Philadelphia.

Zach Layton People
Zach Layton is a composer, curator and new media artist based in New York whose interests include biofeedback, generative algorithms and experimental music. His work investigates interactions of simple elements such as sine waves, minimal surfaces and kinetic visual patterns; it has been performed by the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and presented in New York and Europe. He curates Brooklyn's darmstadt monthly series and co-curates the PS1 warmup music series; he has received grants from the Netherlands America Foundation and the Jerome Foundation and graduated Oberlin Conservatory and Interactive Telecommunications Program.
Zach Rockhill People
Zach Rockhill received a BFA from the University of Kansas (1995), studied at the Scuola Lorenzo de Medici in Florence (1994) and earned an MFA from Rutgers, Mason Gross School of the Arts (2003); his practice spans performance, video, drawing, photography and sculpture. In 2002 he participated in the 40th anniversary FLUXUS events in Wiesbaden, Germany and restaged FLUXMASS and FLUX PROCESSIONAL with Geoff Hendricks, later co-directing the final Voorhees Chapel presentation; recent exhibitions include Performa 07 and gallery shows in Vancouver, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Newark. He curates the ACTIONS series in Brooklyn, received a 2007 NYFA Fellowship in Interdisciplinary work/performance art, teaches at Cooper Union and lives in Brooklyn, NY.

ZBS Media Farm: Program Descriptions (1974, 1984) Groups
ZBS Media Farm in Fort Edward, NY, founded by Greg Shifrin and Pat Anderson, operated an artist-in-residence audio program; the 1974 AIR run (Oct 1, 1974–July 1975) invited ten artists (one per month for five days), was funded by the New York State Council on the Arts and provided travel, room and board and audio tape. The 45-acre studio near Saratoga Springs housed a fully equipped 4-track facility with 12-input mixdown, isolation room, extensive sound-effects library, portable field gear and listed tape machines, mixers, processors and synthesizers. A 1984 brochure documents numerous residencies and field and studio projects by video and sound artists including Laurie Anderson, Les Levine, Bill Viola and David Tudor.
