Cataloging Preservation

Describes efforts to establish compatible cataloging for media arts collections; Independent Media Arts Preservation (IMAP) distributes a MARC-compatible FileMaker Pro template developed by Jim Hubbard with involvement from NAMID staff including Henry Mattoon and former director Margaret Byrne. The template has been adopted by the Kitchen, the Experimental TV Center, Visual Studies Workshop, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Paper Tiger Television and Downtown Community Television Center; IMAP conducted a planning and feasibility study for an online tutorial supported by a Technology Planning Grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts. NAMID at the American Film Institute promotes a MARC-compatible union database and houses over 200,000 records.

Cathy Cook People

Acclaimed filmmaker Cathy Cook produced the film Beyond Voluntary Control, which devises a visual language to explore the psychological and emotional effects of physical confinement; the film uses haunting and poetic imagery and a soundtrack set to poems by Emily Dickinson and Sharon Olds. It incorporates modern dancer David Figueroa's movements and a filmed interview of Cook's mother, who suffers from Parkinson's, to address obsessions, phobias and illnesses that constrict personal freedom. The film screened at numerous festivals, including Ann Arbor Film Festival, Black Maria Film & Video Festival, Madcat Women's International Film Festival, Telluride Experimental Film & Video Festival and Belo Horizonte International Short Film Festival.

Cecelia Condit People

Cecelia Condit is a filmmaker and Professor of Film and Video at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee whose videotapes since the early 1980s examine the relationship between traditional femininity and violent sexual crime, combining live action, appropriated television images, and original music. She has a background in sculpture, photography, and filmmaking; her narrative tapes locate violence in Suburbia, Middle America and juxtapose fairy-tale motifs and princesses with tabloid sensationalism. Titles listed include Beneath the Skin, Not a Jealous Bone, Oh, Rapunzel, Possibly in Michigan, Why Not, and A Sparrow; her work appears on the compilation Cecelia Condit Videoworks: Volume 1.

Chronology and program notes documenting activities around the Center for Media Study (CMS) at the State University of New York at Buffalo and the nonprofit Media Study/Buffalo, with citations to Pamela Susan Hawkins (1998), Marguerite W. Knowles (1996) and John Minkowsky (1977). Dr. Gerald O'Grady founded and directed CMS in 1972 and led initiatives including an Oral History of the Independent American Cinema and multiple conferences and summer institutes; CMS offered undergraduate and graduate coursework and degrees in media-making, history/theory and social effects of media, maintained extensive film and video facilities, and recorded over five hundred hours of filmmaker interviews. Central NY Programmers Group: Histories (1998, 2000) Groups

The Central New York Programmers Group is an alliance of upstate college and media center programmers in Central and Western New York; the group has met since 1986 and was formed in the late 1980s to plan tours of video and filmmakers and to develop circuits for independent film and videomakers. CNYPG is sponsored by Cornell Cinema and the New York State Council on the Arts; John Knecht (Colgate) conceived the program, John Efroymson became coordinator in January 1988 with an office at Ithaca College, coordinators have included Bob Harris, Mary Fessenden, Jane Greenberg, Graham Leggat, Rii Kanzaki and Ann Curran, and three to four tours are co-ordinated each year with guests including Craig Baldwin (2000), Ulrike Koch (1999), Sadie Bening (1998), Kirby Dick (1998) and Alan Berliner (1997).
