Dorothea Braemer People

Dorothea Braemer served as Media Center Manager and Program Director at Scribe Video Center and headed its Community Visions program; she was Co-Director of the Termite TV Collective and an active member since 1994, producing numerous half-hour television programs. Her media work was broadcast on PBS and exhibited internationally at venues including the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Television and Radio. She received grants and an artist's residency, has taught at Villanova University, holds an MFA from Temple University and a BA from University of Massachusetts in Boston, MA, and is Director of Squeaky Wheel in Buffalo.

Dorothy Thigpen People

Dorothy Thigpen is Executive Director of Third World Newsreel in New York City; she previously served as Director of Production Assistance at Women Make Movies, Operations Director at ACTV Cable 21 in Columbus, Ohio, and Assistant to the Festival Coordinator at National Black Programming Consortium. Her video work has screened in the MIX Experimental Film/Video Festival; she has served on nonprofit boards such as Flaherty Film Seminars and the New Festival.

Douglas Irving Repetto People

Douglas Irving Repetto is an artist and teacher whose work in sculpture, installation, performance, recordings and software has been presented internationally; he founded art- and community-oriented groups including dorkbot: people doing strange things with electricity, ArtBots: The Robot Talent Show, organism: making art with living systems, and the music-dsp mailing list and website. In addition to working as an artist, curator and organizer, he serves as Director of Research at the Columbia University Computer Music Center.

Downsville Community TV: Description of Activities (1972) Groups

Downsville Community TV was founded and operated by Dean and Dudley Evenson in Downsville in the Catskill Mountains; the pair produced and cablecast local programming using a Sony 3600 Portapak, with weekly broadcasts transmitted by a green VW van that connected two cables to a Portapak and aired on Channel 3. Programs included profiles of local workers (a teacher canning chairs, a grocer making sausages, a cop discussing the non-existence of crime), interviews on local political issues, and civic and cultural events; they planned a series on small-farm problems and noted concern for environmental issues. Reported in Radical Software, Vol. 2, No. 1, 1972.

Downtown Community TV Center: DCTV: Our History Groups

Downtown Community Television Center (DCTV) was founded in 1972 by Keiko Tsuno and Jon Alpert in a Canal Street loft; they taught free video workshops, ran a mobile outreach unit with funding from the New York Department of Cultural Affairs, and launched a high-school program for at-risk youth in 1976. The group acquired early color Portapaks in 1974, relocated to an abandoned firehouse in 1979 and developed a verité documentary style culminating in Third Avenue (1980), which won a National Emmy. DCTV collaborated with NBC and later HBO on national broadcasts, produced numerous documentary programs, and from 2000–2003 developed the Cyberstudio, ConnecTV, the Cybercar/Speak Up New York! project, and the Afghanistan: From Ground Zero to Ground Zero documentary (2002).

Dudley Evenson People

Dudley Evenson co-founded Soundings of the Planet in 1979 with her husband Dean and produced over 35 albums while serving as art director and copy writer for all releases; she is a multimedia artist working with video, photography, graphics, writing, music and dance and performs on harp and autoharp. She produced concerts and tours including the eight-day Festival of the Creative Spirit in Tucson and coordinated the Soundings planetarium series using special effects and laser imagery of the sky dome. She published in New Age Retailer and led the Interurban Neighbors group, producing videos, newsletters and events to save a local urban forest and its wetlands.
