Jim Trainor People

Jim Trainor was Assistant Professor of Film, Video and New Media (2000) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and holds a BA (1983) from Columbia University, NY; his films include The Fetishist, The Bats, The Moschops and The Magic Kingdom. His films screened at venues and festivals including the Whitney Biennial, Museum of Modern Art (NY), Sundance, Rotterdam (Netherlands), Thessaloniki (Greece) and Golden Horse Festival (Taiwan); awards include San Francisco International, Black Maria, NY Underground, Cinematexas, Big Muddy and Ann Arbor film festivals.

Jim Wiseman People

Jim Wiseman is a video artist and technician who has worked with video synthesizers since 1970; he studied with Nam June Paik and Shuya Abe at CalArts and constructed the Paik/Abe synthesizer under Abe's guidance in 1971–72. He built and combined Dan Sandin's Image Processor with his Paik/Abe, restored the Paik/Abe mixer/colorizer in a two-year part-time project, and uses a Sandin Image Processor, Tannenbaum Chromachron and a Play, Inc. Trinity mixer in his studio. Wiseman produced two video art programs broadcast on WTTW-TV in Chicago in 1974, performed live and satellite-based video-synthesizer work including a 1978 east–west coast satellite performance, collaborated on biofeedback projects for the feature film The Secret Life of Plants, and relocated to Hawaii in 1984.

Jinhan Ko People

Jinhan received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1993; he exhibited in DYS, a group show at YYZ (1995), the Red Head Gallery showcase (1995) and the Pleasure Dome Open Screening at CineCycle (1995). Recent exhibitions include the Art Gallery of Ontario, el convento rico, Art Metropole, Sculpture Center, the Dallas International Film Festival and Media City. He is the sole member of Jin's Banana House and a partner in Instant Coffee.

Joan Braderman People

Joan Braderman is an award-winning video artist, writer and producer born in Washington, DC, educated at Harvard and New York University; she studied 16mm filmmaking and learned black-and-white reel-to-reel video in New York City in the 1970s. She produced documentaries and video art including FOR A BICENTENNIAL WITHOUT COLONIES (1977), THE PEOPLES' CONVENTION, SOUTH BRONX (1980), NATALIE DIDN'T DROWN (1983), JOAN DOES DYNASTY (1986) and NO MORE NICE GIRLS (1989); JDD was included in the 1987 Whitney Biennial. Her work is held by the Stedelijk, Centre Pompidou and MoMA; grants include NEA, state arts councils, AFI, NYFA, Jerome and MacArthur, and she has taught at SVA, Boston Museum School, the London Institute and Universidade Catolica Portuguesa (Fulbright Distinguished Chair, 2002).

Joan Jonas People

Joan Jonas is a pioneer of video and performance art whose experiments in the late 1960s and early 1970s helped shape the genre. She has collaborated with composer Alvin Lucier, performed with The Wooster Group, and her recent work explores digital media and performance; she is developing a performance for the Museum of Modern Art in Dublin where three of her installations will be included. She has received fellowships and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the CAT Fund, the Artist TV Lab at WNET/13 and the DAAD, has won the Hyogo Prefecture Museum of Modern Art Prize, the Polaroid Award for Video and the AFI Maya Deren Award, and in 1994 had a major retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

Joan Jonas is a multimedia visual and performance artist who has performed in the United States and Europe since the late 1960s. She received fellowships and grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim and Rockefeller Foundations, and the Contemporary Art Television Fund.

Joan Truckenbrod People

Joan Truckenbrod was Professor, Art and Technology Studies (1981) at the School for the Art Institute of Chicago. She earned a BA (1967) from Beloit College, an MA (1973) from Northern Illinois University and an MFA (1979) from the School for the Art Institute of Chicago. Exhibitions listed include Gallerie der Gegenwart (Germany), Glaz'art (Paris), Colville Place Gallery (London), Museu de Arte Moderna (Rio de Janeiro) and the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, D.C.). She authored Creative Computer Imaging; her awards include a Fulbright Fellowship and a Scandinavian-American Foundation Fellowship.

Joanna Raczynska People

Joanna Raczynska is a curator, writer and film/video maker who has made short non-fiction films and videos since 1997 and worked in arts administration for over a decade; she earned a Masters degree in Documentary by Practice with merit at the University of London, Royal Holloway College in 2001. She collaborated on projects and exhibitions with composer Will Redman and Termite TV; her work has been screened internationally and in the US, and since September 2002 she has been Media Arts Director at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, NY.

Joanna Spitzner People

Joanna Spitzner, living in Syracuse, New York, is an artist interested in the experiential nature of art; her practice includes video, images, ephemera, performances and writing. She established the Joanna Spitzner Foundation, a Syracuse-based private foundation that awards small grants to artists funded by wages donated from work performed by Spitzner; the foundation functions both as an artwork-in-progress and as a functioning private foundation. Spitzner also teaches Time Arts in the Department of Foundation at Syracuse University.

Jody Lafond People

Jody Lafond is a video artist and independent producer whose internationally exhibited experimental videos and activist documentaries have shown at Art in General, the New York Video Festival and the Images Video Festival; she received a NYSCA Media Grant (2001) and NYFA Video Fellowships (1988, 1992). She has produced documentaries and community media since 1989 with groups including 8 mm News Collective and Media Coalition for Reproductive Rights, taught filmmaking at University of Oklahoma (Visiting Assistant Professor, 1987–1988) and University at Buffalo (Teaching Assistant, 1984–1986), and held a Visual Studies Workshop ARE residency (1996) and Experimental Television Center finishing funds (1992, 1995, 1997).

Jody Zellen People

Jody Zellen, based in Los Angeles, works in photography, installations, net art, public art and artists' books that explore the urban environment; she employs media-generated representations of contemporary and historic cities for aesthetic and social investigations. Solo exhibitions include Paul Kopeikin Gallery (2007), LAXArt (2007), Pace University Digital Gallery (2005) and Laguna Art Museum (2004–05). Her net art has shown worldwide since 1997 at festivals and institutions including File and Whitney Museum Artport (2002); her website Ghost City began in 1997, Crowds and Power was the October 2002 Whitney portal, Disembodied Voices (2004) became a 5 projector interactive installation, and she created five projects for Volkskrant.

Joe Diebes People

Joe Diebes is a composer and artist whose work spans concert music, installation and conceptual art; he graduated from Yale in 1995, studied composition with Jonathan Berger and Michael Tenzer while pursuing Literature and Philosophy, and studied at Juilliard and privately with La Monte Young. Recent works include apocrypha (2000) with Jeff Sugg; Strange Birds (2001/2), a chamber opera using samples of 19th-century orchestral music; and presence (2001–present), a music installation presented by Trinity Concerts and Engine 27. He has composed for The Living Theater and George Coates Performance Works, co-created to whom it may concern with Phil Soltanoff for multiple festivals, collaborated with Deb Fernandez on Malleus Mallificarum, and since 1996 has been the musical force behind GAle GAtes, where he created the Sonic Adventure Series.

Joe Gibbons is an artist who received fellowships from funders including the New York Foundation for the Arts, Creative Capital and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. His work has been exhibited at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Centre Pompidou; it was selected for the Whitney Biennial in 1993, 2000 and 2002. Joe McKay is an Ontario-born artist and Macintosh computer consultant who studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax and has lived in New York for six years; he participated in the Whitney Independent Study Program (2000–2001) and exhibited in group shows at venues including the New museum (New York), SculptureCenter, Artist's Space projects, YYZ (Toronto) and the National Gallery of Canada. He published multiple books (1992–1995) distributed through Printed Matter and Art Metropole and contributed to Lola magazine and its website; he co-coordinated the Five29Ninety9 symposium at St. Annes Church in Brooklyn, has been active in transportation advocacy and wrote for Transmission magazine. Joel Chadabe is a composer and pioneer in interactive computer music systems who has concertized worldwide since 1969 with Jan Williams; he authored Electric Sound: The Past and Promise of Electronic Music, which was praised by Robert Moog and Max Mathews. As president of Intelligent Music he published software including M and Max; his articles appeared in journals and his music was released on labels including Lovely Music and CDCM. He received awards and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts; he is Professor Emeritus at SUNY Albany, founder and President of Electronic Music Foundation, and holds degrees from UNC Chapel Hill and Yale University.
